White Ribbon cut ties with the NRL over Trump invite

White Ribbon Australia has ended its long-standing relationship with the NRL (National Rugby League) after the league invited Donald Trump and UFC boss Dana White to its Las Vegas fixtures, calling the decision "disappointing and frankly, tone deaf."

The anti-domestic violence charity, which has partnered with the NRL since the mid-2000s, accused the league of undermining its values by associating with individuals who have been implicated in violence against women. White Ribbon chief executive Merinda March said the move was unacceptable.

"While the NRL has continued to promote their association with us, this decision by the NRL is wildly misaligned with our values and lacks integrity and respect," March said in a statement to AAP. "We believe the fans and participants of the NRL – almost half of whom are female – deserve better. They deserve the values of respect, integrity and fair play – both on and off the field."

NRL defends decision to invite Trump

The NRL's invitation to Trump has been widely criticised due to his history of legal battles. A federal appeals court last year upheld a verdict that found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll, ordering him to pay $5 million in damages.

Meanwhile, UFC president Dana White was filmed slapping his wife in a nightclub on New Year's Eve in 2022. He later apologised publicly but faced no legal action.

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo defended the league's decision, insisting it was a matter of protocol. "We are playing this match in America. We're being hosted by America," he said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

"Last year we invited Joe Biden, this year we invited Donald Trump. It's not to say we have any political affiliation with any party. We're a sport. We're about bringing people together no matter what your political beliefs, no matter what your background."

Following White Ribbon's protest, the NRL removed the charity's name from its list of partners.

However, White Ribbon has left the door open for a renewed partnership - under one condition. "When the NRL is ready to commit to an authentic zero-tolerance stance to abuse and violence against women, White Ribbon Australia would welcome the opportunity to meet and discuss an opportunity to collaborate on an organisation-wide intervention," March said.

I'm with White Ribbon. I'd like to ask the 2 headed Taniwha what possessed them to invite the worlds most famous rapist, the orange puke and the egg head who assaults his wife..

And is Abdo saying the US federal govt is hosting the NRL & SL? That's news to me

While I agree with your thinking "Business is business" and ethics don't count for a hell of a lot.
Not related but I'm really f'd off that Sky is only showing 2 full games out of 4. Our's & the Panthers games.
Would have enjoyed the Pommie clash & hours of super rugby highlights. doesn't really do it. Grizzle over

thats a massive fail from Sky. The day could have and should have been an all day, carnival affair of live sport. I really am unsure why they haven't got all the games playing. They passed up the option to have live sport playing in order to have some highlights and replays instead. I can only think that they didnt want to pay for the extra games. I would have thought that cost would have been minimal though considering its minor games and they have already paid for the two NRL games. I was ready to spend the day watching league. Even the gap between our game and the Panthers game they have chosen to not show the in between game. You would also have to question their dedication to woman's sports as well, seeing that one of the games they aren't showing is the Aus v England woman's game.

Overall, quite poor from Sky and another reason why competition is needed in NZ

Looking at their schedule, doesn't look like sky sports has the rights to Super League anymore and is available from this streaming service instead:

It's easy to see why there is a perception that the game has become soft..

Trump is the elected president and a representative of the American people:

With White Ribbons view, you wouldn’t want to go to America at all if you don’t respect their democracy and the peoples view…

Now do Dana White. I would also think they are against violence to Women. The not respecting democracy part might just be in your head.
Dana employs a stable of woman with equal opportunity for massive pay.

If the US people can look through Trumps actions and elect him as a leader, then the US as a group has said his actions are acceptable and role mode material. Is Trump the problem; the US country or white ribbon?

He also slaps his wife in public. Hate to think what he does behind closed doors. So if someone who is known to abuse woman but is elected it then makes abusing Woman is all good now? What a fucked up time period to live in for people to even think like that.

Hey, it's Salvation City, too. There are churches within easy walking distances of the casinos, bars and whorehouses. So the Sinners can be Saved by the time they leave.
It's a bit like - you may have noticed - how often 24 Hour Gyms are directly opposite bars and clubs. 3AM Closing Time, stumble shitfaced and exhausted out of your favourite watering hole. There's a Jetts opposite, that you vaguely remembering joining in a "I gotta get fit this year!" NYE Resolution fit. And you've got your card somewhere amongst those coins and tokens and crap in your wallet. And, yep, it's open. The Gotta Get Fit Campaign starts Right Now!

I don't think it's that salient of a point - as the NRL and White Ribbon can address, educate & influence players behaviours while also reaching the demographic via the game to help educate & make change.

Good luck doing that with Donald Trump.

It's white ribbon's right to make the stand they have. Free speech and all that.
Of course you don't
