Would you want to see a Draft in the NRL?

Cool let them go to Union and play a sport that never get watched. Drafts work in many sports, so saying young players wont go where drafted is demonstratably false.
Said just like Vlandys would.

They have other options at that age. It’s easy for them to code hop.

Prospects in America don’t have other options. Nothing else is going to come close in salary. Of course they are going to live wherever is paying them millions more than the next best alternative.
And? The NFL pioneered the way to dominance. All American basketball has done is squandered the half century head start they had.
NFL is no where near as successful as NBA at the moment. Look at TV deals and revenue. Look at player salaries. It’s not even close.

College and schools. Meaning it’s properly funded moving forward and has an organic fan base attached.
Ok sweet so you’re talking about fuck all money then..

Clubs would put up hundreds of thousands more than schools to put together age grade sides fly them around the country and put them in high performance centres. It’s not cheap to put a team in SG ball or Harold Matts, it’s why the Warriors didn’t want to do until recently.

What are you smoking? There’s 10x the pro sports in the US. You can be a pro arm wrestler.

NFL overtook NBA in the 70s. You are confusing salaries with popularity.

Yeah it’s the NRL, not Formula 1.

Are you arguing for a college / high school program now?

This is another take on the draft. Not for rookies but a draft for the open market. I am still neutral on this as the devil is in the details.
This sort of thing would have better immediate effects than the tall order of a junior draft imo (the basic idea of I don't like either) - contract management in the nrl rn is not optimal, i think we can all agree on that - so much depends on local fiefdoms and the spiderwebs of agents and interchangable administrators, managers and media-personalities

Isn't that effectively a restraint of trade or something like that? How does a player get the best deal for him? You will need to end up with an NRL decided value for each player?

Ben Hunt goes in the draft

Tigers have first pick as they are last on the table. They say yes we will take him at $650k. But the Roosters who have finished near the top of the table and have cash freed up by players leaving can offer him $900k.

Does it turn in to a real life version of one of Wrighty Wrighty 's games with a silent auction, reverse snake scenario?

valid point - just as fans we all like to have opinions on squad make up and tactics, the risk/reward of introducing draft or free agency systems is gamifying the commerce between clubs and players - my point was that there are already local points of leverage in this commerce system which tend to privilege some clubs over others and if there was a genuine attempt to level that out then that probably would be better? Always unforeseen ways of manipulating things of course - tanking being an infamous method

No
To a Rookie Draft. No incentive to develop your playing pool as already pointed out by many.

Maybe
To a 1st Grade Draft - players not resigning with current clubs would enter this ending the nonsense that is signing for another club over a year in advance.
Player contracts / asking would need to be pre determined to ensure one side isn’t unfairly priced from sign a player who then signs for another club for $200K less.

What About
A Sliding Scale Salary Cap?
17th extra $500K - 1st $0
All off season signings are undertaken at seasons end in a signing window from Oct - Feb.
As above no more player signings a year in advance.

Players not picked up enter a free agency window during Jan/ Feb to allow clubs to pad out squad, manage unforeseen injuries prior to the season starting.

Its a difficult one with players not resigning with their current club. On the one hand you get the 1st November thing the year prior to the contract finishing and potentially a player playing a season for the club knowing he is moving on afterwards. On the other hand it does give clubs, players and fans more certainty and time to manage their roster.
