Could we maybe merge this and the Drummers thread, and turn it into a GDE thread??

Welcome to the Jungle over Ru Ana Te Whenua is a big downgrade. G&R is extremely generic and overplayed in sports runouts as is, but it is also better suited to the Tigers or Panthers. It's also a strange change since I would imagine that you have to pay licensing fees to use a song at an event like that, and surely Guns and Roses would be more expensive to use?

The announcer had a barry crocker and has been talked about enough, but I will say Up the Wahs, works as a slogan, but as a chant, it sucks ass.

I don't think any announcer could have made that chant work, but if he persists with it, I think even those who don't mind the Wahs nickname, will change their mind in no time..

As for the drums, I didn't hear them all night except one time around the kickoff of the second.

All in all, a very weird game day atmosphere to be in, even when the team was doing well that first 20

I mentioned this in another thread. It sounded bad on TV so it would be 10x worse at the ground.

A shame as the club looks to be providing a good game day experience starting from last year with the lights going out before the team comes out, the victory song, But they look to have made a few decisions that also aren't the best.

The team song should only be done after the game. I'd prefer it only after victories as it makes the experience more special.

The game day experience all felt very manufactured, whereas last year it felt far more organic in terms of the whole "up the wahs" thing developing.

They've really cranked it up to a cringe level now, complete with the big "UP THE WAHS" sign on the north bank and the announcer pushing it every 5 minutes.

I get that most of us here are grumpy bastards but they'd be doing well to just dial it back a notch or two. Hype has to be built, not bought.

There was a good interview with Nik Brown on a podcast from a week or so ago. Basically said he was told the week of the game that he didn't have the gig anymore, and confirmed in a roundabout way that the new guy isn't a league fan.

Really disappointing to dump a bloke after 29 years with no warning.

That is really sad if the club handled it like that...

Definitely a few missteps (or old habits) to start the season.

Be interesting to see what happens at Chch next week. Presumably will be a local GA down there and Warriors won’t take their ‘new’ hype guy

I think he is from Chch. He was working the mic at the trial match, I'm pretty sure.
Wonder if the mic will take the Warriors to court for not providing safe and pleasant (well, as pleasant as someone screaming their tits off milli-millimetres away from you can be) working conditions

That is very disappointing. From the times I met Nik (from a very small sample size a long time ago), Nik is also a good guy, a funny guy, who lives his footie. Imo he was part of the Warriors ‘tribe’ so to speak and MSS won’t be the same if he isn’t the announcer.

Who would be a sports broadcaster in New Zealand, there’s just a handful of jobs at sky and once your out of that boat, your like sumo doing the cricket which he sucks at.

Monty’s got an good voice, but is a bit captain obvious, but Lamar just .. nah .. blairy knows the game but that voice isn’t going to fly, costigan had his moments but was mostly annoying, McIvor was punishing, even Vossy got on the nerves when he was doing it every week.

Basically it’s all been downhill since Graeme Hughes!

No one pays or does not pay their sky sub due to commentators so they’ll never invest in that area.

As for the ground announcer, they’ve sold a million tickets this year, the crowd will do all your work for you, chants and gimmicks are for trying to make it a fun day out when the team sucks.
