Sports NZ Domestic Cricket Thread & Under 19 World Cup

Meet 32 year old Sean Davey. He took a 5 wicket bag in the last round of Plunket for Cantabs.
He got his break into FC only in the last few years.
He is absolutely rapid when I watch his footage. This sounds lame but I am frightened by his bowling when I watch him. I wouldn't agree to bat against him and I played Premier Grade as an opening bat.

Now read this line twice.

70 wickets at a bowing average of 21.27. He has a list A bowling average of 20.
One FC ten wicket bag already.
Raw unadulterated pace..

Out bowling the very popular fellow opening bowler Fraser Sheat at the moment.

I will keep a spot light on Sean this year even though probably at 32 too old for a call up.

I wouldn't call Sean Davey rapid based on what I've seen of him playing club cricket here in Christchurch. He's definitely not scary quick, but very handy bowler nonetheless.

I said we would cover the Under 19 world tournament in the OP so here we go

Rising Domestic Stars Set for U19 World Cup

Posted Saturday, 20 December, 2025 in International News

Five players with domestic caps have been selected to represent New Zealand at the 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Otago opening batter Tom Jones will captain the 15-strong squad who depart for Africa on January 2.

Jones, who will be attending his second U19 Cricket World Cup, scored an impressive 119 on First Class debut for Otago last month.

Additional squad members with domestic experience are Northern Districts batter Snehith Reddy and wicketkeeper Aryan Mann, Otago fast bowler Mason Clarke, and Auckland bowling allrounder Jaskaran Sandhu.

Reddy and Clarke made their List A debuts earlier this year for their respective Major Associations and attended the last tournament in South Africa alongside Jones.

Reddy brought up the highest score of the tournament (147*) against Nepal, whilst Clarke took an impressive 4-62 against runners up India.

Seventeen-year-old batter Hugo Bogue has been selected fresh off an excellent display for Otago at the National Under-19 Men’s Tournament in Lincoln last week.

Bogue was the tournament’s third-highest run scorer averaging 72 with a high score of 169 against Northern Districts.

The youngster will be joined in the batting unit by Auckland trio Brandon Matzopoulous, Marco Alpe and Jacob Cotter who were the tournament’s fourth, fifth and sixth top run scorers, respectively.

The pace-bowling stocks will be bolstered by Northern Districts allrounders Harry Burns and Flynn Morey who each took a five-wicket haul at the tournament and ended up on 10 wickets overall.

Former BLACKCAP and Northern Districts stalwart Anton Devcich will head up the coaching unit, alongside NZC High Performance coaches Paul Wiseman and Graeme Aldridge.

For players to be age eligible for the tournament they must be under 19 years of age on August 31 2026 and born after September 1 2006.

Head coach Devcich congratulated the squad.

“Huge congratulations to all of the boys who’ve been selected,” said Devcich.

“With such a talented pool of players there were some difficult selection calls, but we think we’ve landed the right balance.”

Devcich, who attended the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2004, said the tournament offered players an insight into cricket at the top level.

“The Under-19 World Cup is a really exciting opportunity for the best age-group talent to showcase their skills on the world stage and experience their first taste of international cricket.”

“For most of the players, it’ll be their first time representing New Zealand, which will be a special moment for both players and coaches.”

The squad will have a training camp in Bulawayo before the tournament’s warm-up period begins on January 9.

All New Zealand matches and the tournament finals will be broadcast live in on Sky Sport NZ, with live scoring available at nzc.nz and the NZC App.

This is a terrific list where did you get it from? Did you make it? It is sensational. Thanks for sharing.

My own list. There is a lot of talent in the domestic scene. Hopefully they will get opportunities at the next level. In my opinion Tim Robinson is a perfect example. You can see he had the potential but after the century he scored against Australia, you can just see the confidence he now has to go with the talent.

If the selectors will actually pick some of them. I was disappointed Mitch Hay wasn't given a second test

Ben Lister (29) the only left armer i could think of who they've given a shot in the shorter form.

Rohit Gulati (27) Off spinner from Auckland currently the leading wicket taker in Plunket Shield

I get the reasoning they want these younger guys to have a body of consistent form behind them before they get the call up, but geez i thought there was an oppertunity to start blooding say Mariu and Mo Abbas on that Zimbabwe Test tour at least.

Agreed. The only time you see changes is either because of injuries or unavailability. Would be nice to see the selectors showing some flexibility in regards to selections. Especially when playing at home and they've already one a series and have a dead rubber why not use that as an opportunity to blood some new guys.

One positive in regard to the IPL impacting our season in way of us losing some of our players to the IPL, is we have no choice but to give the young guys a go e.g. last year Muhammad Abbass, Rhys Marui made their debuts last year against Pakistan.

Will have the same issue again next year when South Africa come to play a T20 series after the world cup. Would like to see new young guys given an opportunity with some players being unavailable because of the IPL.

Ben Lister turns 30 in a matter of days and Rohit Gulati won't qualify for NZ until he's over 30. Believe he only moved to NZ in 2022. He will have to do 5 years residency in NZ before he can qualify for the Black Caps.

This would be my future ODI team. Mitch Hay is the wicket keeper. Marius and Robinson are my openers. Ravindra at 3 his batting numbers are better at 3 then opening. Jacobs and Phillips to bring the power at the end of the innings. Kenne as the bowling all rounder. In my opinion out of all the seam bowling all rounders he has the most upside as a batter. Would provide a long batting order. Phillips/Ravindra/Abbas's make up the fifth bowler

Rhys Marius
Tim Robinson
Rachin Ravindra
Muhammad Abbass
Bevon Jacobs
Glenn Phillips
Mitch Hay
Simon Kenne
Adi Ashok
Ben Sears
Will O'Rourke

all out pace with Sears and O;Rourke.
Are they accurate enough for One Day Cricket. I once did an analysis and economy rate for the bowler is more important than wicket taking as you rarely manage to bowl a team out. Wicket is important but 3/60 is worse than 2/45 in one day cricket. Relevant here to the choice of O'Rourke and Sears who I would pick as my test match bowlers especially against Australia where nothing but pace is remotely effective.
Love the Adi Ashok selection. Can't get enough of watching him bowl
I don't know why Abbas isn't already in the team. It is very rate to find a fast bowling all rounder like him. Our version of Cameron Green and Flintoff.
Tim Robinson has low batting averages in list A by memory but has carved at T20. He is turning a corner this season though and seems to be putting in some good consistent performances in domestic.
