The amount of taxpayers & rate payers money that went into getting the viaduct ready for the Americans cup , tnz victory is a bit hollow

Helen Clark of the opinion we should throw a whole lot more at it to host the next one like her government did. Would the investment be work it, or do we have too many internal things we could use that money towards?

I reckon he has a done a superb job of this campaign to defend the Cup and organize the venue. There will be a lot that we don't understand as to why it wasn't here but what has been done has been done well!!
I don't disagree with you but I would love to see the Cup defence held in NZ.
It's only money that has seen it go overseas

I agree, love to see the Cup defence here but as I understand it, there is a cost to hold the event and mount a campaign that couldn't be guaranteed from NZ so it was decided to go overseas. However, the opportunities are far greater in number and return in Europe than we realize here in NZ..

yeah not a great look in todays economic climate, millionaires racing their yachts while people struggle to meet basic needs.
Which, to be fair to Dalton, he totally acknowledges and accepts.
My main gripe with the America's Cup is I don't know whether it's about who has the best crew or who has the best boat.
If I ran it, either every competitors boat would be exactly - down to the tiniest detail - the same (boats being made where the Cup is being held), or crews would have to swap from one boat to another boat (round robin ie TNZ race in their boat, 2nd race in Australia's, 3rd race in Great Britain's etc) to prove they could win with different configurations/setups etc.

Everyone would John Nick John Nick but the financial hurdles are too steep at the moment

As an aside when did the All Blacks last defend any of their world cup titles in NZ?

Why are the financial hurdles too steep?
Is the reality that TNZ are offered more money to take the defence off shore & ignoring the fact that Auckland has already been set up for the competition

If you want to win the thing then you need the $$$ (upwards of $150-$200m) for your campaign and the team can’t raise that in NZ

There's was talk around the time that Dalton announced that the defence was going overseas, that more than enough money was raised to have the defence in NZ. The problem was that the donors in the yachting circles wanted Dalton to open the accounting books. Dalton said no and that was that.
There's talk from some of twats on this forum that put any criticism of Dalton and TNZ down to jealously of the $, but reality is that people with money in the yachting circles heap criticism on Dalton and TNZ just as much.
