Bullet holes found in Argentine touring car after race
The gunshot holes in Leonel Pernia’s Ford Focus.
The car being driven by eventual Turismo Nacional Argentina Class 3 champion Leonel Pernia was hit by multiple gunshots during the season finale.
Photographs from his MG-C Pergamino team show a bullet embedded in the radiator of his Ford Focus, while a headlight also sustained gunshot damage at Viedma, on November 18.
Pernia was unharmed, and not even aware of the incident until after the race.
“I called this conference due to the facts that are publicly known and reported by the Turismo Nacional organisation,” he said, according to Carburando.
“The mechanics found what seemed a bullet shot, so the team filed a report as soon as the team arrived in Pergamino and it was confirmed by an expert that there was not only one shot, but there were two, of which one still has the bullet embedded somewhere of the radiator.
“But hey, I don’t want to delve into details because it would be reckless on my part.”
APAT (Asociacion Pilotos Automoviles Turismo/’Association of Touring Car Drivers’) has confirmed that it will cooperate with investigations by local authorities.
Pernia, understandably, was left shaken by the incident.
“I went to fight for a championship in a car race and ended up with two gunshots, I have never experienced anything like,” the Argentine told campeones.com.ar.
“What happened chills the blood and has nothing to do with a gun, a bullet or a shot.
“It must be eradicated and the person responsible must be found and acted upon.
“In motorsport, we have to be united so that the truth is known and understand that you lose and win like in any sport.”

A major Auckland surf park project headed by All Blacks great Sir John Kirwan has been given the go-ahead from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
Subject to conditions and further approvals, the ruling means construction can start later this year on a 43-hectare area in Dairy Flat, set to be developed into a precinct centred around a highly advanced heated wave pool.
The park should be a major draw card for the rural district in northern Auckland and appeal to the surf community.
The resource consent was granted after AW Holdings 2021 Limited applied under the COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act last year.
"I'm delighted for us to achieve resource consent, as it enables us to deliver on our vision of a natural, inclusive surfing destination that is true to Aotearoa," Sir John said.
"We are committed to having a meaningful, positive impact on our planet by developing and operating the Auckland Surf Park sustainably, and across Auckland by employing locals and providing experiences that enhance wellbeing - including water safety, mental health and surf therapy programmes."
The artificial surfing lagoon is expected to produce between 600 and 1000 waves per hour, with more than 30 different settings catering to all skill levels.
In addition to the wave pool, the precinct will include accommodation, a market space and restaurants, as well as a data centre and solar farm.
Plans for the surf park were originally announced publicly in 2020, with Sir John partnering with international surf park company Aventuur to bring a sustainably powered and operated wave pool to Tāmaki Makaurau.
It is estimated Auckland Surf Park will contribute more than $600 million to the city's economy over the life of the project.

Erin Routliffe captures WTA World No.1 doubles ranking presented by PIF
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Erin Routliffe on Monday captured the WTA World No.1 Doubles Ranking presented by PIF for the first time in her career, becoming the first woman from New Zealand to ascend to the elite ranking position.
Routliffe confirmed her rise to the top spot by reaching the final at The Championships, Wimbledon over the weekend with partner Gabriela Dabrowski, which marked her second doubles Grand Slam final within the last 12 months having won the US Open in 2023. In addition, this season Routliffe was crowned champion at the WTA 250 Rothesay Open (Nottingham) and also reached the final at WTA 1000 tournaments at the Miami Open presented by Itaú and Internazionali BNL d'Italia (Rome) and the WTA 500 Rothesay International (Eastbourne).
The 29-year-old becomes the 49th woman to hold the WTA World No.1 doubles ranking and overtakes Belgium’s Elise Mertens atop the PIF WTA Rankings.
Routliffe wasn’t the only of her countrywomen to make history this last fortnight, with compatriot Lulu Sun becoming the first woman from New Zealand to reach the singles quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
