The ref was found guessing on a lot of calls early. 2 turning point calls: Pings Walker for markers not square, was an absolute guess. Walker tries to challenge and told he can't - watching it on replay Walker was right, he was 100% square. That ended our momentum in the first half.
The second was taking it back 2 plays to penalize TMM for an innocuous high shot. They simply don't do this to other teams - that is a Warriors fuckover special.

Yeah the penaltys for not being square at marker are an obvious ploy by the refs to give teams that are losing a leg up, it happened to Berry last week aswell.
The strangest part of the high shot was that Faalongo was no 10 minute HIA

Similar to how I feel.

Many games to be won for us still and I'm still certain we will make the 8.

Just won't be doing much if we get there.

I still think we can give the competition a fair shake. The score got away from us at the end, but I'd argue that any side with 11-12 men for extended periods against the storm are generally going to end up losing by a much larger margin. For me, there were enough signs in this game to demonstrate how dangerous we can be. If it was anyone other than Storm or Panthers, our power game in the first 20 minutes would have been enough to bury the opposition. Cows couldn't cope with it last week. I'd suggest that if we start against the titans next week in a similar fashion, we'll put many more pts on them.

Of course, the problem with our style is that it requires self discipline: we need to defend well against any penalties we concede for being too excited on defense. Our inability to defend against our ill discipline has cost us this year. We need to get better at it. Once we can manage that, we'll be hard to stop. Last week's cows game is really the only game this year where we have been able to pull it off perfectly.

That penalty though for the late hit on Hughes. Id be embarrassed if SJ was playing for penalties like that.

We talk about it over here with players staying down to get penalties for head contact and cards, but they need to stamp this playacting and diving out of the game.

Yet Egan gets hit high in the mush by Hughes and no call despite Egan stalling the play the ball and letting the cameras catch the bloodied mouth.

If the refs (bunker) were competent then the acting would tail off..

Most sides in this comp would have lost by 30+ pts against the Storm given a similar scenario. If our wingers hadn't lost the plot, who knows what could have happened. We were in the ascendancy again when the ref made that batshit crazy call against TMM. Still, the team demonstrated enough to suggest that we have many shots to fire before the end of the season.

Prior to him coming on they showed a stat that we'd completed at 50% in the 5 minutes before his introduction. Couple that with us conceding 10 unanswered points before him entering the game along with the Storm introducing Welch & NAS to coincide with his entry, it'd be more accurate to say your assumption has no merit whatsoever

The lack of discipline is what killed our momentum and lost this game for us.

I'm torn about this statement.

At the end of the day there were a host of things that went against us on the day.

I do agree that at times we made poor decisions and there were some average errors from us, and we did seem incapable of defending in that 20 min before half time. Those things we can work on and fix, but man it's frustrating when there are several phantom penalties called against you, or not called (Wayde's high shot).

Regardless of that, I think there were some really strong moments for us and at times, we look like we could win the comp we play so well.
It's quite interesting that the last 18 months have been built on defence, yet that seems to be a bit of an issue currently, as we scored 24 points against the Storm (and put over 20 on Penny and Dolphins who are also top 4) so our attack is looking good, while defence has fallen off a bit.

It looks like we have all the ingredients to be a threat this year. I'd love us to make top 4 but imo top 6 is just as key - a home semi before meeting Storm, Sharks or Penny away. All of those teams look much more beatable this year.

In line with other opinions aired, the problem with the team right now is positions 2-5. Our forward pack has been doing its job. In almost all of our games this season, even the ones we've lost, we have outrun the opposition, in both total run metres and pcms. Even yesterday, we outran the storm by almost 300 metres and only 2 storm forwards made 100+ metres (Katoa and Loieiro). Conversely we had 5 (AFB, Ford, Barney, Tohu and Walker). Ford in particular has been a revelation up front. Barney and Niukore clearly add a hardness to our edges that was missing in the earlier rounds. I'd be tempted to replace Capewell with Ale/Bunty but overall I think the forward rotation is fine and one of the most versatile in the comp.

Our backs are letting this team down. I think the defensive issue is beyond just the wingers (DWZ and Montoya)'s edge defense which I agree has been suspect for a long time. Our backline is visibly much slower than many other backlines in the comp and it's starting to gets exposed on a regular basis. It concerned me last week how quickly DWZ gave up on the chase on Drinkwater last week and it happened again for the Storm's 4th try. Once the linebreak was made, none of our backs had the pace to prevent the try. The tries melbourne scored on our edges (#3, #5) was simply a case of our centres getting burned by their faster opposites (Meaney in particular).

Admittedly, this issue was exacerbated in this game by the injury to Rocco and our having to move an injured walker to replace him. Not to mention the 11-12 man issue. But the problem is something we need to address moving forward. Metcalf is really the only one in our side with top level speed and he's sitting out on the sidelines atm.

So why have the back 5 looked like world beaters at times?

I am generally one of the most optimistic posters on this thread, so I tend to agree with most of your post here. Many of the things that cost us this game were either out of our control (ref) or self-inflicted (dumbass wingers). The latter is idiosyncratic to this game. But the former is something that has been true since 1995. I think we just need to accept the fact that on average the reffing will go against us and adopt the mentality that our discipline has to be better than the average club, especially given the risks associated with our penrith-style play. It's our fault for putting ourselves in a position where the reffing can cost us the game. Blaming the refs is always the sign of a classless loser (ie ricky stuart). I appreciate Webby for never going down that route.

We had 90% possession for the first 20mins. It was always going to "swing".
