Both were justified sin binnings, though the Storm should have been a man down in the final 10 for that cynical play when we were hot on attack. Also, I watch a lot of league and can't recall any other team getting penalised 2 tackles later for a high shot that wasn't an act of thuggery. Its happend twice to us now though.

Masterclass in gamesmanship and playing to the ref from the storm, and silly compounding errors just undid all the amazing work we did at the start, then it felt like back to square one. Frustrating game that one.
Thats what gets me- don’t the refs review the games and go- fark the storm pulled one over us there- won’t let that happen again…
They just seem to fall for their shit every game, every season 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
Everyone knows they crowd the ruck, play the ball off the mark, Hughes dives…
Wouldn’t say it cost us the game but certainly didn’t help.
I thinks it’s the predictability of it that irks me.

From 14-0 up thought it was pretty obvious we lost the momentum (and the game really) after that 20 minute mark through not being able to defend our penalties and errors.
- Niukore gets pinged with that bs not square penalty, they march up field Katoa scores off the end of it
- DWZ spills that Hughes bomb Anderson scores off the back of it
- Jackson Ford gets penalized for the "dangerous" contact on the kicker, they go upfield expose our right edge and Ieremia scores
- A Tohu Harris error in the play the ball, Katoa makes the line break and Meaney scores supporting

So we yielded 20 points and all momentum in the space of about 14 minute which tbh we never got back as we lost shape and compounded things through more errors and penalties.. Was evident during our losing stint pre Panthers that this was the similar pattern during those losses and for mine while the attack needed to be tweaked with variations it seemed obvious that cutting down and defending our errors was what needed to be the main focus.

The new attack was interesting. Certainly looked allright at the start. Big fundamental change in Te Maire being the main ball receiver (51 recipts to SJs 41), and the go to red zone kicker, and it certainly looked like he had free reign to play both sides while Shaun pretty much just camped on the right edge and took the long kicks......still a work in progress and tbh once we lost momentum and the sinbinnings we seemed to lose all shape.....however, losing momentum through errors and penalties and not being able to defend those errors and penalties should be the main takeaway from this game.

Maybe Webster told SJ to stop being a ball hog and let Martin run the show a bit more so he thought fuck it.
Webster pre game did say SJ was going to be playing a different style.
TMM played as halfback today, SJ as 5/8.

CNK usually chimes into attack on right but was on the left today. It seems like we only know how to play with one dominant playmaker, and attack is focussed that side.

I thought we would be able to see both sides show off their attacking abilities with TMM and SJ running shows on either side, giving options galore and take away the unpredictability.

I was wrong. We just moved from one dominant playmaker on right to swtching it all to the left.

Marata was awesome as was Ford and Barnett. AFB was at his usual best. Bench use was a little strange but seems like CHT is supposed to sit there all game and come on for final 5 mins if any. Got 6 mins today due to Walker playing centre for over a half.

I think the coaching staff is devoid of using the players well or adjust game plan to suit them. We did it so well last year, but this year shows we are not able to adapt to game situations. Though it was again the right move to start with Walker rather than Tohu. Capewell we didnt and dont need.

That first 20 was awesome though. A lot of it because of the storm bumbling away. Our defence in pushing back their players was great. Love to see intent and attack even in defence.

Our backs are very average outside of CNK (although his nonchalant effort in that near storm try was embarrassing).

The team feels either hot or cold. Bench players need to be impact players that can make a difference. The players we have it seems like we are trying to get a lead and then put the bench players in to grind out a win w defence. Its a weak mindset if that is actually the plan.

Glad thats Paps and Munster were not playing.

Refereeing was atrocious but that should not discount the stupid errors the team made to hand the win to the storm.

The ref was found guessing on a lot of calls early. 2 turning point calls: Pings Walker for markers not square, was an absolute guess. Walker tries to challenge and told he can't - watching it on replay Walker was right, he was 100% square. That ended our momentum in the first half.
The second was taking it back 2 plays to penalize TMM for an innocuous high shot. They simply don't do this to other teams - that is a Warriors fuckover special.

The Ford phantom strip as well.

The non penalty for the high shot on Egan who had blood coming out of big mouth (apparently the video ref chose not to look at that one like the Faalogo one).

The Eli Katoa not square at marker one too.

To be fair - the way we played at times you can't blame the ref solely for that loss.

But that's 5 instances that the ref has gone against us and they're not even 50/50. He blows a penalty for the Storm when we were square, and then doesn't blow it when the Storm arent square at marker. We get called back several plays for a high shot on Faalogo, and then Wade collects one in the mouth with blood and it's not given.... Just be consistent!

And that's on top of 2 poor calls the ref gave us that we overturned....

I think we should go back to CNK and TMM, that's obviously the best as it beat Penrith 😂. Sarcasm by the way.

TMM and SJ worked real well early days last season before Te Maires injury. I don't think judging one game against the best team in the competition currently vs two games against poorer opposition is a fair cop.

TMM and CHT would not have made any difference to that result last night, it was our poor discipline and defence that lost it. Not our attack
Game was in the balance and Nuikore was about 1 cm from scoring under the posts. The balance tipped once they controversially went back to the TMM tackle which otherwise would have been a full set of six in Melbournes half. We had them rattled and it took that call immediately followed by Hughe's gamesmanship to get Montoya binned that swung the game back in Melbournes favor. A lot of what ifs but thats how close it actually was until the binnings.

Big picture I had us winning only 3 of the 5 games between the byes but still making the top 6 due to an easier last section of the draw. I had us losing to the Storm.

We were in it until the 6 Storm penalties in a row and 2 send offs. Against lessor teams I still back us and we should smash the Titans with our past months form.

Disappointing but you don’t win em all. Onwards and upwards.
