In the past Webster has brought guys straight back in when returning from injury. The argument was they didn't lose their spot.

Halfback is a different proposition as it is such a key position and how you play.

Against expectations we won while Metcalf was out. Boyd should have been rewarded for his performances.

Metcalf was great for us last year and you could see how much he wanted to own the team. Who would replace Johnson was quite a debate. It looked like the club was always set on Metcalf. He took the opportunity. It is amazing how fast things have turned around.

Boyd was signed as the club was concerned about depth in the halves. He bided his time and took the NSW Cup team to success. Even decided to stay on last year when it looked like he'd still be fighting for an opportunity. That was a good endorsement on how the club was going. After finishing at the Titans and his confidence shot he's turned things around.

We have talked about our halves coming through. Let's hope we have the depth or players ready if there are injuries.

And there it is. Remember the reporters/podcasters (and posters with valuable scoops here) who told the correct info, for future reference

I’d just let him go once he found a suitor. Dressing room doesn’t need any weirdness and he can walk into the dragons etc as a start up 7 without wasting valuable time for his age.

Playing devil’s advocate maybe the club sees mets at 6 with Boyd, that defense won’t work, and his body is brittle, and they chose boyd for 7, so he has to go, on top of $900K cap freed up. This the only alternative angle from “he threw his toys out” narrative

Hands up those of you who didn’t know what acceded meant. 🙌

CG - use plain english next time

Part of me thinks Tanah in the seat for a couple of years, while we bring the likes of Jett and Thompson through, is ideal, but a bigger part of me thinks we’re still probably slightly short a top class fullback and top class halfback if we actually want to win a comp. So debating Metcalf vs Boyd now possibly isn’t even the right debate, it’s Boyd/Metcalf vs another beyond next year

The only fullbacks and halfbacks that have won a comp in the last decade are Walsh, Reynolds, Edwards, Cleary, Papenhuyzen, Hughes, Tedesco, Cronk, Slater. Go back another decade and you add Barba, Townsend, Coote, Thurston, Inglis, Minichiello, Pearce, Stewart, DCE, Boyd, Hornby, Orford, Hodges and Perry/Lockyer. It’s a pretty glittering list and probably all of them easily clear Taine and Tanah.

Inruin is always on about how Webster needs to be more ruthless, which I tend to roll my eyes at, but this is next level ruthlessness.

seems to be the club has capitalised on a chance to replace a slightly temperamental, expensive and very injury prone 7 with a lower maintenance, cheaper and more durable model. The head turning boyfriend meme 100% applies.

Boyd has earned his contract (when it's announced) nothing against him.

But think back to October 2025 when the Metcalf contract was announced, wedding in Queenstown, committed to NZ, committed to the warriors, loved the support the club gave him.

Tanah Boyd was too good for NSW cup, but very iffy in first grade, not bad, but not a long term solution.

https://www.warriors.kiwi/news/2025/10/23/staying-right-here---metcalf-recommits-until-2028/ it was a further two years - which haven't even kicked in yet! 2027 and 2028 would have been his big Money years, maybe the 2026 year was re-done with all the money freed up from Tohu, Walker etc. And now the Warriors won't be on the hook for them.

Now only 6 months later, bloke can't get a look in, if he wants to stay gotta play 6, despite the current 6 playing the house down and him repeatedly saying that's not his go.

Metcalf was here when Te Maire Martin outplayed Shaun Johnson as a 7 every which way during the middle of 2024, as soon as Johnson would return from injury that year, the team would slump. But SJ was the Man, and TMM wasn't, just was what it was.

Now LM thought he was going to be the Man and get that level of leeway, to return to his position when fit, but what have you done for us lately son.

The club know he's not wired like Marata Niukore, play him on the left edge, right edge, starting middle, bench middle, left right out - doesn't matter - the fortnightly checks were healthy, happy to cruise along until a new deal comes at another club. They knew what LM reaction would be, but its the club publicly acceding to his demands not the other way around - well played Cappy and co.

....

The one hole in this theory, is what in the fuck are the warriors planning on spending their cap space on, every expensive player seems to be leaving, you have to spend it somewhere!

I think it can be both.

Warriors said that Metcalf is a 6 in the first choice side for now (if he’s in it at all), and that they intend to re-sign Tanah for next year and that he’s the starting halfback as things stand, and he didn’t love that.

Then asked for permission to explore other options and the club allowed it but not super happy about it bc he’s still under contract and the cap and decent halves for next season aren’t exactly easy to get given clubs locked down players early last year with the Bears looking for a marquee signing (and the November window in general means signings get made in this weird year out way).

The question is whether or not Boyd will accept the move to 6 next year when Nathan Cleary arrives, or whether the situation repeats :p

Obviously the above is not serious. CHT not re-signing would certainly release the cat among the pigeons though!
