Titan Boyd signs for two years

AuthorRichard Becht & photosport.nzTimestampThu 31 Oct 2024, 10:01 am

Gold Coast Titans halfback Tanah Boyd has signed a two-year contract with the One New Zealand Warriors to the end of the 2026 NRL season.
The 24-year-old has amassed 69 NRL appearances since making his first-grade debut with the Titans in 2019.
“We’re thrilled to get Tanah across to the club. He’s a quality, proven player who will add great depth to our squad,” said One New Zealand Warriors general manager recruitment, pathways and development Andrew McFadden.

A former Queensland under-20 representative, Boyd joins incumbent halfbacks Te Maire Martin, Luke Metcalf and Chanel Harris-Tavita.
“Tanah’s arrival will create healthy competition among our halves,” said One New Zealand Warriors head coach Andrew Webster.
“He brings a great kicking game, strong game management skills and he’s also a proven goal kicker. We’re really looking forward to having him at our club.”

Predominantly used at halfback by the Titans, Boyd has also made a number of appearances in the No 6 jersey.
“There’s so much to like about the direction of the club, from Webby to the fans and the support the team gets here (in New Zealand),” said Boyd.
“There’s been plenty of players who have come this way (Australia to New Zealand) in the past and in recent times who have proven that if you buy in you can make an impact and that’s certainly what I plan on doing.”

Boyd played alongside veteran Kiwi and former Warrior Kieran Foran over the last two years while he’ll have a familiar face at the Warriors in 2024 Kiwi squad member Erin Clark, who is returning to his original NRL club. Boyd and Clark have been Gold Coast teammates since 2020.
Boyd’s father Shayne was a prop, playing a total of 10 first-grade matches (nine for Penrith in 1991-1992) and one for Balmain (1993).

I don't get the negativity here. He is probably the best 7 we have in our squad. Every other half we have is a non kicking 6. This guy is game managing kicking halfback. He's bang for buck, experienced yet youthful, always been rated in Aus, and is only on a 2 year deal. On SEN the Australian presenters really rate the guy, saying he's an amazing team man and hardest working player at the Titans. He's a low risk signing with upside. Yes not a game breaker, but he's not a star signing.

Hopefully he finds the same success as Barnett, Montoya and Ford - Meh signings for most on this forum who punched way above their weight.

I think I don’t mind him as a depth signing cause traditionally teams have 4 playable halfs, this ofc is considering they dont believe Jett is ready for first grade yet. Like he isnt the solution to our halfs unless as you said maybe the change in system could elevate him. But as it stands from previous form we probably aren’t competing for a comp with him as our main half.

Barnett was always a good player and certainly not a meh signing. I was super excited when we got him.

If you want to complain about something, complain about the club not having a plan for SJ retiring, considering it could have happened way back at the end of 22. Covid demo'd our development and I imagine this is a consequence.

The roosters signing chad shows the state of the market, it's absolutely dire.

Tanah Boyd is a money ball pick.
He ticks all the boxes
He is a lot better pick than Daejarn Asi who some people wanted on this message board.
I don't think he is going to suddenly improve though and I don't think he is being recruited based on potential.
He is being recruited as a nuggety defender, and great all round kicking game. He will be one member of the team, other people can score and set up tries.
All reports are he is an extremely good person and is popular amongst his team mates. And that should count for something.

Solid kicking game or great kicking game?

I feel as if a narrative of its own is being created here as comments get accentuated over time. It seems to often happen on this (or any) forum.

I'm not expecting us to be getting 5 repeat sets and a 40/20 each week.
Relative to TMM and Metcalf and CHT he has a great kicking game.

Also relative to all halves in the NRL with the exception of 2024 he put in great or elite level goal kicking percentages.
Can also actually kick a drop goal which only the better kickers can do with traffic coming at you.
In fairness to your point his positional kicking will not be Ricky Stuart in his Raiders days level but it will be a notch above NRL standard. He is an above average kicking half and there is an argument to be made that is enough to get him our starting 7 spot especially when you factor in he can tackle better than Metcalf and probably even on tackling with TMM and CHT who are both very good defenders as far as halves go. He won't bone crunch tackle like TMM and CHT though he just takes care of business defensively efficiently.

Give Metcalf a chance to take the reins. Webby has talked about him coming along on this front, and being our main man after SJ (as a 7). We haven't seen what he is going to offer us yet.

I don't really disagree with your points as a whole, but if Boyd is a great kicker (which requires vision), an excellent defender, a smart and dedicated team man, and has decent enough pace then what is he missing?
