It’s funny I can see your point been totally correct in the eyes of Mets and his family/management, leading to publicly sending the club a please explain letter and basically stating he’s being the big man sacrificing and playing 6 for the short term

And the narrative isn’t going over well with the NZ customers and media this week aka a backlash 😂 There is another high road hard working way but they’re leaning into the contract angle instead, life choices each to their own
Exactly. Everyone is at a base level, self interested. Mets had a very public rise and fall and he is simply desperate for his redemption. Which is currently being blocked by a guy who has just gone through that.

The issue in Metcalfs eyes will be that he has zero time to waste. He cant afford to have a 24month road back to 1st grade like Boyd just did.

Don’t disagree with this at all

The question is what leverage does he have to be making demands to the club? If he’s got another offer on the table then yeah fair enough but if he’s calling a bluff then he’s got big balls. If he’s using his contractual right (what I thought you are implying) then he has nothing to stand on…

He doesn't need "leverage", he's not trying to force the club into doing anything. He's desperately trying to achieve his goals in his assessed timeframe.

If everything plays out as it is currently doing, what is Metcalf's path back to 1st grade? Boyd is durable as fuck. So the occasional cameo at 6 when CHT KOs himself or 14 if Egan goes down. He could conceivably play less than 12 games in the next 2 years. Goodbye career.

Metcalf would've been sold to dream to move here to be SJ's successor. He finally got his crack, performied well but then got injured. The club once again sold him the dream of continuing to be our 7 and the poster boy for the club and he recommitted. He's now been fit enough to play 3 games but hasn't been given the 7 once, in any grade, so I can understand his confusion. Nothing I've heard has suggested he was reluctant to come back via reserve grade, so it seems like pretty poor use of a resource by the club

Plenty of juniors face the same issue. Promised big things, have big dreams but life gets in the way and half them never even get to debut in the NRL.

What makes Metcalf so special?

This is the harsh reality of performance based, elite sport.

He's not a junior though. He's the white guy the club used to promote Pasifika Round ahead of his return from injury.
I don't disagree that it is a performance based industry but they dealt him a near unwinnable hand when they asked him to perform in a position, he wouldn't have practiced in since SJ retired in 2024, on his return from an ACL and paired in the halves with someone he'd had zero game time with previously

my kid pulled a hissy fit because the coach put him as defender when he wanted to player striker.

we had to teach him its not all about you and the coach knows best

he now plays for another club

as striker :cautious:

my kid was 11 years old

I thought a meeting to clarify some issues was what was requested. Doesn't need leverage for that process.

At eleven I was striker, midfielder, defence, wing, goal keeper. Everyone had a bash. Not so relevant in Metcalf's story chapter but. Good on your little bloke.

Derden is confirmed out for 6-8 weeks. Unless rushed back for origin that means he misses game one and two. Looking even more likey that we could see both walker and boyd called up to origin camp instead of going with the old blood. As it's over just one game.

Mets should be putting his energy on requesting to play 7 at cup so he can potentially rip in when/if boyd’s away in that dragons and sharks game coinciding with SOO and make a case to keep his jersey

I would be surprised if the Warriors hadn't had several conversations this year with Luke and his people.
Webby would surely be talking with him and making sure he's in the loop. Luke is a highly paid senior member of the team who has figured highly in the club's plans for the next couple of years.
I surely would with a senior member of my staff

On the Boyd/Metcalf thing. I wonder how much Webby is looking at what's happening with Ciraldo at the Bulldogs
10 rounds in and you replace your above average winning half with a potential star and your season falls apart. Your hooker gets the shits with being subbed off constantly leaves or gets moved on. Your half heads to the south of France and laughs all the way to the bank.
And 12 months later your team is still struggling.
Hopefully Webby is learning lessons from it all
