Damn, I have had a few days without following things and am extremely surprised how quick this has developed.

I don't know what to think about this. I really hoped a Metcalf/Boyd combo could work. CHT and Boyd have been killing it this year but there is something a little dull about that pairing, I don't know how to word it properly but Metcalf has that x-factor the others don't and it is still quite early in the season to have to have that clear cut call between the two.

I think Boyd is playing out of his skin but selfishly I wanted to keep both of them but that was never going to happen with Metcalf doing what he did. He must have seen the writing on the wall for a little while and he obviously didn't like not being the main man anymore like he was clearly promised when we re-signed him and that 100% happened.

I guess it would be like if you were the number 1 salesman in the company and without you, the company would go under and everyone talks about you as the most important person in the company. Then you go on leave for a couple of months and come back and the new guy is doing even better than you were and people don't treat you the same any more or talk about you the same, it is all about the new guy. I think anyone in that situation would feel a bit betrayed and like you have been replaced. So I can somewhat understand how Luke would have felt. He had two options. 1. Go back to NSW Cup, kill it, come back in at 6, kill it and take over the 7. Requires a lot of hard work and a hit to your ego or 2. demand your old spot back at 7 even though you are not currently playing well enough and force the coach to make a call that can only go against you.

Boyd has always been super committed to the club which is admirable and shows how loyal he is and he is demanding to be picked with how well he is playing.

If Boyd were to get injured we are going to be in trouble without Metcalf unless Jett is almost ready which I hope he is. The thought of a CHT/TMM combo is....... (don't even want to think about that). I see a massive future for Jett at the club and I hope he does want to stay here and this really gives him a better pathway with one less 7 in front of him.

End of the day I trust Webby so back his decision. But please Webby do not put CNK back in the team when he returns from injury. We need Taine at fullback as an extra ball player.

You give him way too much credit imo.

He knew this playbook from the SJ toy throwing incident, this is spookily similar.

Also he is not some grunt middle forward, he is a self proclaimed student of the game. Certainly he is intelligent, there is no doubt about that and I think he is very savvy as well, this is playing out exactly how he wanted imo.

Look at all the insights us mere plebs have thrown up in this scenario, and we are outsiders, mere fans, this guy understands the internal workings of the machine.
Yeah quite possibly, but honestly I’d give anyone* the benefit of the doubt as we don’t always know the human situation underneath - particularly in a scenario like this where I sort of feel like we end up getting what we wanted anyway and being able to (attempt to) re-sign our coach’s preferred halves combo and move on our most expensive half who is riding the pine

*Ok not anyone, but most whose names don’t rhyme with Pat Dodge

NSW Cup benefits us hugely. He is not on 900k this year, he is on far less and he is our FG quality depth if we have an injury. We want him match fit and confident because dollars to donuts he will be used if available this year. The best scenario is him fronting up with a great attitude for the club that has backed him. Hopefully he can find a gig for next year promptly so it is off his mind, but I think it is short-sighted to be eager to part ways in 2026.

This all rests on his maturity really.

Speaking of NSW cup, I Just want to throw a thought experiment out there.

If Tanah Boyd suffers a form loss, and has to go back and play some Cup games, and Tanah was refused to play cup, would fans afford him the same excuses that are being afforded Metcalf over his no show on the cup roster?

I would wager most would take it for granted that Tanah would do as he is told......

IMO he will still be coming right from an ACL for a long time. As luke kerry put it in some podcast about a month ago. It takes another 6-8 months once back into the game to really come right. So TMM being the replacment 7 if an injury occurs should have a similar impact to a weak metcalf. Which was fine in the case he could be here long term. But if metcalf is motivated enough to start right now looking for a new club that gives us the maxium amount of time to sort out how to use his 900k pay packet for next year. I honestly don't think the club should look a gift horse in the mouth and say "no, we're paying you. So you're playing cup.". This is major best case.

Imagine if this turned into a ryan matterson case. Where he is happily wasting the club's 900k a year in cup for 2 more years. Woulden't surpise me if the club is paying for his ticket to aus to start negotiating now.

Are we assuming that Metcalf was told to play cup? Or just to take a week off while this is all very raw and report back on Monday after magic round as part of the team…

Good discussion, I'm not actually trying to change your mind. Giving people the benefit of the doubt is a higher form of Kungfu in life.

Just thrashing the ideas around.....

I'd be upset if we had anyone above 700k a year, who is here for multiple years stuck in NSW grade. It's a sign of awful cap managment.

I would assume that he was told to play cup. That is the normal operations right?

I doubt he was given time off to feel better since all of this is his party.

Okay guys serious downside now that Dearden is injured there is a slight chance tanah could get the qld call and now our other good half back has split hahahaha.
That would honestly be a dream come true. Players getting SOO time come back different beasts. If we managed to get Boyd into a SOO camp (and so soon after signing) we’d be laughing all the way to the bank

It’s all good I’m very open to the idea that Metcalf has properly spat the dummy here, just don’t love everyone turning on a bloke without confirmation - again probably partly bc vibes are otherwise pretty good this year so I’m feeling particularly magnanimous
