I disagree, other than a drop in merchandise sales down South Island. I don’t see how the Warriors lose much tbh.

Rugby league doing well in NZ is only a good thing for the Warriors. Imagine the interest that rivalry will generate

Much larger player pool as well with a bit of time.
It is shown that we sell out everywhere we go. It's more than just a few jersey sales.

We potentially lose 80% of our fans down south. The ones in Australia we might be ok since they probably support both but that's more jersey sales gone as many of those will get some orca merch.

Will be go back to being Auckland Warriors?

The homesick card also won't be as effective too.

I'm not against a second team in NZ, I welcome it. Just stating it's bad for Warriors, good for NZ.

Ok fair enough.
The Warriors are a business. And anything that affects the bottom line of that business in a “negative” way, is bad. That will be the case here.

However….

I asked in a previous post. How many paying members are there in the South Island? (Excluding that 3 game deal) I dare say, not many.

Do you, or any other member follow more than one team in the NRL on social media or whatever? I do…… Warriors are a solid number one, but still.

And finally, if/when the South Island gets a team. Will the South Islanders stop, and I mean literally stop supporting the Warriors? Again, I dare say. No.

SI will be their priority, but they’re still Warriors fans.
To put it another way. I’m going to be a fan of that South Island team. Warriors are my undisputed number one team. But I’ll still be a fan.

So other than merchandise sales (which may be significant, idk). What are the Warriors actually losing here?

It would be impractical for the Warriors to “tour” the South Island. But……

Wellington, Hamilton, Rotorua, Gisborne, Hastings, New Plymouth, Taupo, Tauranga, Whangārei, Etc.

Why can’t they go to these places on a 1 or 2 year rotation so it doesn’t get stagnant. The SI team existing may force the Warriors to go on “tour” around the country more. One game a year I mean. Gotta look after your base. Great way to see other parts of the country, excellent for wider PR.

Love a chch team but think they will go with a perth team or PNG first
It sounds like the plan was for 3 teams over a specific period to get up to 20 teams. It looked like they favoured starting with Perth and PNG.

The second NZ was likely to be team 20. The main thing is they continue working on their bids to the point they are hard to reject.

The South Island has the stadium part sorted with two modern enclosed stadiums. They need to continue with the plans for their centre of excellence and ensure they have the financing.

Like others have suggested starting in the NSW Cup could be worth investigating. They would have the base of a club already in place. It would also give them something to learn from.

I can't unsee see Yin and Yang in that logo, I assume it is intentional? (Yin to the Warriors yang type deal), but yeah nah, no thanks

I still like it more than both interations of Kea branding but

Still interested the most in the Endacott bid I think. Moffat and Chalmers have a spotty record at best as far as Im aware, and a wise man once said, Real Gs move in silence like lasgna..

‘60k people lining up’: South Island bid’s urgent NRL meeting amid potential Warriors rivalry

Fox League from Fox Sports
November 7th, 2024 12:34 pm

South Island Kea boss David Moffett has reportedly requested a meeting with NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo, urgently requesting a sit-down to discuss expectations of the potential franchise.

That is according to The Daily Telegraph, who are reporting the Kea bid believe they will be in the best financial position of any of the eight proposed bids.

Moffet’s outfit were one of three bids to emerge from the South Island of New Zealand, and their proposal reportedly included the NRL’s $20 million license fee and they even planned to appoint Michael Maguire as their head coach.

“We believe we know what is required of the of the NRL and so we’re working on that,” Moffett said to News Corp.

“But what we really need is we need to meet with Andrew Abdo and talk through with Andrew just exactly what they’re looking for.

“To date, we’ve never been given an opportunity to do that. So in order for us to be able to actually put in a meaningful bid that the NRL will find attractive, we need an opportunity to sit down with Andrew and say, look, is this going to fly?

“If it’s not, then we’ll at least know that we’re not going to be able to reach the thresholds that they’re looking for.”

As it stands, the NRL are reportedly focused on finalising a deal with the Western Australian government for a franchise to be based in Perth.

The Perth team will potentially be introduced into first grade in 2027, followed by Papua New Guinea who have already struck a $600 million deal with the Australian government.

The 20th franchise could potentially then be a South Island-based side, and the Kea could utilise the new stadium being built in Christchurch at the start of 2026.

A South Island team also provides a rivalry with the Warriors, who are based out of Auckland in the country’s North Island.

“The rivalry between us and Auckland or between the South Island is legendary in this part of the world,” Moffett said.

“So if we have the Kea here playing the Warriors, if I had a license and I knew that our first game against the Warriors was going to be the opening game of the 2027 season, then I could put those tickets on sale now.

“And I would I get 60,000 people lining up to buy tickets for a 30,000 seat stadium for that game. And that’s ongoing.”

If there is a SI team then perhaps we wil have at least 1 more home game at GMMSS
The Warriors will have less international travel as the NRL will likely schedule the local derby twice a season.

I'd suspect there would be similar amount of games at Mt Smart. Both sides will likely try and have games in other locations to build or maintain their supporter base.

I'm not sure if all 3 South Island bids are looking at Wellington as a home ground. Dunedin and Christchurch will likely get the majority.

I would say the Warriors likely won't play anymore home games in the South Island but I wouldn't be surprised if the Warriors have an annual game in Wellington to shore up the capital.

It will still be "overseas" travel (to another island)

That isn't much of an issue though. It is similar to the Australian sides travelling interstate. Both sides would be able to travel the morning of the game without it causing much disruption. They can get back the following day pretty quickly.

The Warriors flying in and out of Australia lose a lot of time compared to their counterparts while they have to wait around at airports.

If anything a second NZ team may see the end of Australian sides bringing games over here.
