Politics 🗳️ NZ Politics

1 - there is no fair, just opinion. Why do the left get to decide ever increasing tax is fair and then structurally lock it in?

2 - don’t really understand your point. Most govt of any kind does what’s best for their supporters rather than everyone. Eg Ardern’s captain calls.

Don’t mention or care about the pandemic. I was double vaccinated and think the govt was in a no win situation. Think the lockdowns and mandates went to far but that’s in the past.

I’m not talking about the right and the US. I’m talking about horseshoe politics where the extremes of the left and right do extreme things
In answer to 1, when do they structurally lock it in? The right always reverse and then put us in huge amounts of debt paying for tax cuts we can't afford that benefit the rich :)

Fact is, as I've mentioned many times, we haven't had a left leaning government since forever. Only a more socially equitable one that evens things up after decades of favouring the rich.

Extremes are no good for anyone.

The ever increasing creep of taxation over time. Funny Australia has a lower rate as percentage of GDP and better outcomes.

In regards to locking it in, once you commit it to higher wages, more staff, more ministries, paying equity pay, not increasing retirement age, etc, it’s almost impossible to remove.IMG_1392.webp

Here’s the dilemma with power generation as I see it.

Public generators generally tend to invest not in the latest technology as they aren’t worried about how the cost to generate power…. the local and central governments will just give them public money to subsidise a “public service”. Power supplied by publicly owned generators isn’t cheaper to produce…. it’s the subsidies which make it cheaper.

Private generators tend to adopt the latest technology more readily to reduce the cost of generation.

Because of that, private generators are also leading the way in the adoption of renewable power generation.

And there’s the dilemma….. climate change needs us to move away from fossil energy but the private companies will be supplying that renewable generation at a faster rate.

Disclosure…. we have a small holding in one of the public/private generators in NZ.

Energy generators respond to govt incentives. They will choose the path of greatest subsidy.

Renewable energy drives up total system costs. Generation is only 1/3 of the bill. Plus renewables only work with massive public subsides. Every jurisdiction proves that

If private companies actually deployed the latest generation tech, you would see ultra supercritical coal generators being built Aus & NZ. Instead you will get SCGT gas turbine, the 2nd most expensive generator there is.

If anyone's seen Luxon lately, would you mind posting his public statements on Venezuela's illegal invasion by the US and the data leak?

Wouldn't mind hearing from our Prime Minister with some leadership at some point.
Heaven forbid the PM should go on holiday like the rest of us.... I don't think Luxon is far enough up the international food chain to get a heads up from Trump to cancel his holiday so he could issue a statement on Venezuela or that Luxon would know when hackers were going to schedule a cyber attack.

Oh, and I can't find any releases by the Leader of the Opposition either.... but perhaps he should enjoy a holiday and not the PM.

So working in the northern hemisphere means he’d return to work on the 3rd or the 4th because it’s winter there. You do realise that NZ is in the southern hemisphere so people actually take their summer holidays now?

Sorry to tell you but since the 1950’s NZ has had a Duty Minister during the summer holidays.

What should be off more concern is that for most of December, all of January and until the second week off February, Parliament doesn’t sit and there’s no select committee meetings so a number of MP’s take an eight week break from Wellington….. and we thought teachers get the best holidays…. Sorry, it’s our Lords and Masters!!!
