Why have the reserve bank (not National) killed economic activity, which started for a year under Labour?

Because the economy was operating beyond its capacity which is the driver of domestic inflation (proof domestic inflation figures)

Do you remember the staffing crisisā€™s in almost every sector? Businesses closing because they didnā€™t have staff?

Honestly I would rather the Ministry of Education lost a few thousand staff back to the numbers they used to be so those staff went back to teaching in actual school and the kids have a teacher instead of obscene staffing shortages with the Ministry pooling staffā€¦
Except more teaching staff will not be hired.

I would be interested in the everyones fundamental position on govts involvement in the economy.

Iā€™m of the belief the govt can never perform as efficiently as the private sector. Government should only do stuff when itā€™s of national importance or to big for private. Eg. Schools/ health/ etc.

Ideally lots of stuff should be publicly administered but privately done - eg public housing should use private companies but overseen strategically by the public sector.

Examples of great ā€˜leftā€™ policy include kiwibank and KiwiSaver under the previous labour government. To big for private and nationally important. Kiwibuild should have been a mix of public/ private. The last Labour govt failed so miserably because it was ideologically against any private sector involvement resulting in blowout costs and the inability to get anything done. They didnā€™t understand the public sectors weaknesses.

On the political spectrum Iā€™m very socially left and economically right. I align most closely with Nz First on straight policy - although never voter for them due to the Peters factor.
Lol. NZ first has only one policy. Do what the donors want.

Im involved in education and STRONGLY disagree.

Schools have their own allotment of teachers based in ratios independent of govt budgets.

Schools are combining classes due to lack of staff and inability to meet ratios. Plus they hire unfit teachers that canā€™t teach because they have no choice.

As I hinted a week or so ago my industry contacts had been very hushed about the situation and I suspected something.
Appears that there was a cloud over her even before she sailed
Did you see q and a this morning JN? What do you make of an allegation put to Collins that Captain Gray is being protected?

I donā€™t like the standard response after a situation like this where they wonā€™t comment until an investigation is carried out to buy time and hope everyone loses interest.

Within a few hours 90% of the facts should be clear enough to give the public a preliminary outline of what went wrong.

Just politically I have found the contrast between Labour and National interesting in times like this. Under Labour Jacinda would have been front footing it all dressed in a navy hat highlighting her communication skills to make it a big deal and promote everything they are doing. Labour was great at responding to a crisis. National get Collins to front up and downplay the whole incident.

Donā€™t like at all where this has the potential to go diplomatically, the Pacific needs to be a united front with the ever growing threat of conflict. It was put to Collins that Samoan officials have said 200,000 litres has made its way out to which she disputed after footage showed a trickle making its way out. She of course did concede that any is bad. The timing really couldnā€™t be any worse with the Kings arrival imminent and world spotlight on Samoa. The ocean is such an important commodity to the Islands that everyone needs to be united in the response to this disaster

Noticed there was a lot of great lengths right through the interview to look on the bright side with no loss of life, which is true but I get the feeling an inquiry or report into the incident isnā€™t going to be good for her

Thanks Noitall šŸ˜Š
I have watched and my take is that she was not the right person to question.
Her knowledge of the situation is limited and that's not a criticism of her.
She seemed to fluff over things.
Like the Navy's current capabilites.
In opposition she would have been scathing.
As the Minister she is happy with Otago taking over the role.
Politics at its finest.
I'm still of the opinion that there's a lot of information not being disclosed.

Nice to have an insight from someone with a maritime background. I must say that Collins doesnā€™t fill me with a lot of confidence as defence minister

Masterclass from an intelligence group there, now we are seeing a proper psyop. Captain is actually HERO! Praise be!

While I am no fan of Collins I think she was taking the interview when it should have been someone else. Naval perhaps šŸ¤”
Easy for her to fluff over stuff and plead ignorant.
That's not a criticism but she was the wrong person to be fronting.
Still think something smells here

MaybeTop8s article claims the opposite. They are trying to hire to staff and reduce the reliance on temps and locums.
How does it claim the opposite, the clinicians appear to be saying cutting locum and temp pay 40% in May has made it worse, and they haven't been replaced with permanent doctors.

Health NZ chief clinical officer Dr Richard Sullivan told RNZ the hospital had been experiencing overnight staffing issues for some time.
"We are continuing to look at how we address these long-standing workforce challenges to ensure the needs of the local community continue to be prioritised. At this stage, we have not been successful in recruiting senior doctors. Contingency plans will remain in place to ensure patient and staff safety while we continue to recruit to these vacancies," he said.

.......

Senior clinicians have told RNZ the doctor shortage at Northland's rural hospitals worsened dramatically in May, after Health NZ cut pay rates for locums - or temporary doctors - by as much as 40 percent.

Im not 100% with the healthcare sector but have lots of proximity. And I do know that drs love being locums and making $1000 a day,

How much do locum doctors make in New Zealand?

Locum doctor salaries in New Zealand are influenced by specialisation, experience, location, and the placement's duration.
Specialisation: Specialists often earn between $2,000 to $3,000 NZD per day.
Experience: Juniors might earn $75 to $100 NZD per hour, with Registrars doctors earning up to $200 per hour.
Location: In remote or rural regions, locum doctors often earn up to 50% more than in urban areas due to medical professional shortages.

In one year. This last year. With this government in power. No hope for our young, no vision apart from looking after the wealthy

Wait so you're saying there's too much restrictions on private trade and more needs to be done for job creation?
