šŸ¤– AI Summary

šŸ“ Summary:

The thread centers on New Zealand's upcoming election, primarily debating the economic management and policy differences between the center-left Labour government and center-right National/ACT opposition. Key criticisms target Labour's fiscal stewardship, citing ballooning government expenditure #7#272, housing unaffordability, and unfulfilled promises like KiwiBuild and dental care expansion #16#12. A user #7 highlighted Labour's annual 9% spending growth versus 1.5% under previous governments, arguing this fueled inflation. National's tax-cut policy faced scrutiny over funding gaps and legality, with user #215 questioning Luxon's reliance on "trust me" assurances.
Leadership competence emerged as a critical theme, particularly in later posts. Luxon drew heavy criticism after a contentious interview where he struggled to defend policy details #194#199#211, while Willis faced backlash for her economic credentials. Hipkins garnered fleeting praise for articulation but was ultimately seen as representing poor governmental outcomes #45#119. A trusted user #308 presented expert economic analysis contradicting Treasury optimism. Infrastructure issues—like Wellington's water crisis and the dental school staffing shortage—were cited as examples of systemic mismanagement #235#12. Notable policy debates included road-user charges for EVs #220, immigration impacts on rents #299, and coalition scenarios involving NZ First #182#258. Early fringe discussions on candidates' rugby allegiances gave way to substantive policy critiques, culminating in grim Treasury forecasts discussed in posts #271#304#308. User #168 also revealed concerns about Labour rushing regulatory changes to entrench policies pre-election.

i’d be surprised if he’s had direct contact with the prime minister.

and if he had, i know he looks like a potato but could big LUXXX be so stupid as to say he hadn’t if there was a paper trail to say otherwise?

who fucking knows.
but i guess we’ll see, sooner or later.
No he never mentioned he’d spoken to him directly but certainly spoken to those in the necessary channels. Don’t think it’s any surprise to anyone that they are under resourced and quite fascinating that this has never been 100% funded through our taxes. Often you’ll see a plaque on an ambulance saying it’s donated by so and so. Seems that it’s only when there’s a spotlight directly shone on whichever broken election promise, the level of outrage is what forces governments hand, such as the delivery of cancer treatments they promised in the election and had to act upon. Though not supplying all they said they were going also

Luxon in a bit of a bind. On one hand there will be act supporters echoing Seymour’s statement, even potentially national supporters who support this bill. On the other hand if he lets Seymour dictate the terms, he continues to look like national as a major party are letting the minor parties have too much sway and disproportionate to the votes cast to what parties

National has consistently said they won’t support it past the first stage. ACT has always know this.

ACT is just pandering to their base.

I don’t know why the opposition is giving it air… except for them pandering to their base as well…

All political theatre isn’t it?

It's stoking more division though, Lux said it was too divisive to consider last year... unless he and Winnie are planning some kind of sneaky backflip on the bill... wouldn't surprise me, just confirms they all work for Atlas.

Can’t understand why it is even getting that far.

Surely when $$ are trying to be saved all over the place why waste money on something that isn’t going anywhere

Means nothing. National scrapped the smoke free bill without even mentioning they were considering it before the election. Have a strong feeling this will go ahead, even beyond the first stage. Seymour won’t let it lie. Luxon is still very naive in regards to politics

That would be disastrous imo, and cause some serious civil unrest.

Speaking of corruption, here's the Firearms minister bought and paid for by the gun lobby. Utterly, utterly corrupt.

If the greens, TPM, or Labour did anything 1/16th as bad the howls from certain people would be deafening. They should be now too.

Did you end up getting a ban on the thread… or did it take a week or so to come up with your next juicy morsel of anti centre-right material?
