Major/reputable ship builders around the world will rather deal with other countries rather than us.
We will be left with less reliable builders.
Tugs are another issue.
The weekend has proved that.
We are lucky the incident was in sheltered waters
That’s something that amazes me…. given how dangerous the Strait can be that we have no ocean going tugs in Wellington.

Who’s run it down? Bluebridge can operate successfully just on fares plus make a profit, plus not crash their ferries.

Why can’t kiwirail run ferries self funding, paying for any new ferries without govt funding (like Bluebridge does) and pay for maintenance? Why is it running down? A govt run rail operator trying to do a job that a specialised ferry operator can do much better.

Doesn’t stack up with your neoliberal argument unfortunately.

Who’s selling it off? The govt is going to continue to fund it, which to me seems daft when kiwirail is worse and more expensive, but I can understand for the resilience factor.
I guess as Bluebridge are owned by Merrill Lynch there are plenty of $$ available to keep it going

damn dude.
not only do you have a raging hard on for a left that doesn’t even exist in this country. i think they’ve also given you stockholm syndrome.

you’re the perfect blind and unswayable voter.
Shit marv, you still remind me of that wet bandit I first saw on home alone. Wet as in wishy washy, you seem to defend a side then plead I hate them all. At least this guy sticks to what he’s saying unapologetically

You don't have a clue about me Marv. But there's a number of you lot on here that clearly love the direction the government's going in, and don't seem to care as long as you're all okay and fuck everyone else.

Which is well documented on here, so no surprises eh.

hahahahaha fair.
no i assure you ive voted once in my life, and i despise all politicians.
they’re all exactly the same. they’re all full of shit and make promises they can’t keep and blame the last guy.

nz politics to me is like watching a bottom of the table game early sunday afternoon while listening to someone bitch about all reasons their team lose except the fact that they fucking suck.

you will probably only ever hear me praise on a personal level politicians from the left because they at least pretend to have heart.

luxon however would have been my pick this last election ONLY because kindness, hope and positive vibes weren’t going to fix the hole we’re were in pandemic or not.

the direction the government are going in is irrelevant to me. as was the direction the last government took us. i can’t do anything more about it than you can. so work your ass off and make the most of it.

no one’s ever complained themselves to happiness dude.

I hope your choice of an extended manufactured recession is going well for you. Keep leaving those sinks running mate, it’s your calling card

it wasn’t my choice, i voted that one time to first get ardern in.

but interestingly, what’s your estimation of where we’d be comparatively right now with labour greens TPM?

You're right about one thing - in this forum we can't do anything about it. But in the real world, if you really want to, you can make a difference. I'm hopefully providing a counterpoint to the insanity that is the ideology of the right. Scrape off the surface and you get bigoted misogony, racism, fascism and authoritiarians. And that's just the billionaires.

you lost me dude. the only exceedingly wealthy person i know is a gay art collector.

she wouldn’t fuck with anything you mentioned there.

Labour were, and are a disorganised rabble beholden to the polls and couldn't break into the cabal of the neoliberal public service. I truly hope they're reflecting on their lack of conviction and how costly that was, and actually stand for something other than a pale imitation of Tony Blair, but I don't hold out much hope

There wouldn’t have been millions borrowed for tax cuts that are providing no relief, and actually taken money out of the pocket of those most needing. Wouldn’t have been millions of dollars wasted on years of planning to be making steps towards eradicating smoking from next year. Wouldn’t be millions wasted on a scrapped deal for a ferry that just washed up and is a potential to be another Wahine disaster

You tattooists are rolling in it. Didn’t know inruin collects art

hahahahahaha.
shit, i haven’t tattooed in a long while. i do have some business interests though that involve tattooers, and they are definitely not making the money they used to make.

getting rid of the old boys club and the gatekeepers, while great for optics and inclusion has done little but take something that used to be feared, dirty and mysterious and turned into hallensteins/glassons. tattooing has become retail where the customer is never wrong.

i along with one or two others came into NZ tattooing from the auckland punk rock/hardcore scene of the late 90’s early 2000s which was a massive time for auckland in regards to gay and lesbian culture coming into the mainstream. and i can comfortably say all i said regarding the changing of the guard (as such) impartially because while i have respect for the giants who’s shoulders we stand on, i spent a lot of years not just embracing but pushing for inclusion within that industry.

that’s something i’ll always hold closely.

there still would have been millions borrowed anyway though.

until any government can house everyone needing housing they will always need private landlords.
so while labour made made it the only business model that couldn’t claim back interest, i can’t see them ever making it impossible because homelessness would sky rocket.

the smoking one is fucked. agree 100%
although we have no right to keep a straight face while complaining about it unless we also demand government also stop us from having;
vaping
alcohol
gambling
and, junk food.
those things kill more of the same people than smoking does.

also, how we have the most vulnerable part of auckland and NZ filled with junk food, liquor stores, overpriced shitty rental accommodation, gangs poisoning their own community, youth crime and domestic violence but feel we have the right to complain about things like the americas cup is fucking beyond me.
paying these people a pittance to exist (not live) is fucking bullshit and all governments forever are guilty of it. tricking them into thinking you’re for them by giving them a couple extra bucks is also fucking deplorable.

agreed wouldn’t have been millions scrapped for ferry deal.
but there was also apparently no planned way to pay for the ever raising price for them. no solid plan for the picton and wellington terminals that would be under water at half their life span and if not for all that, the new ferry’s weren’t due for delivery for two and a half years at the soonest anyway so these last two episodes of the ferry’s fucking out are somewhat irrelevant to that, surely.

as someone who lives in wellington and with the new shared path from petone to the city around the harbour, new ferry terminals and ferry’s would be fucking epic. but i think its as good of an idea to be ordering all of that from
the debt we’re in as it was tearing down the health system and rebuilding it in the middle of a pandemic.

great ideas in theory.
fucking bewildering timing.

so what’s your hope for the next election? if labour are out, the rest are starting to all look pretty radical aren’t they?

So we were planning on ferries with 100 year life spans. Overseas most ferries have banned EV’s because if they catch fire they are impossible to put out.

What happens if in 10 years half our fleet is EV’s? Would the ferries become unusable and obsolete?

Nothing about the politics but just wondering.

Isn’t it itrelevant. They would only keep it if it was economic and profitable.

Any private owner won’t sink money into a loss maker for 20 years…. But a govt would.
