Why does it favour right wing voters? Can lefties not enrol and vote? What am I missing?

It can be said when Labour bought these changes in last term they were stacking the election in their favour then? Was THAT an attack on democracy using your own logic to destroy your whole argument?

It certainly is the plague of the 21st century and cruel to watch family and loved ones fade away. I think it’s necessary these sorts of drugs are available for the types of purposes you’ve mentioned that are calming your Dad’s mind but do worry about pharmac and the like making them available when the its really hard to have complete control over for them when anybody can grow plants or cultivate mushrooms. That’s obviously the medicinal side and I do wonder if the acceptance of the like as medicinal has had an effect on elderly and their willingness to partake? The gold card certainly adds a worthwhile saving in the purchase of cannabis above board in people I know and disappearing is the stigma that generation often has around cannabis and potheads. We feel how we feel about these things and I’m not trying to change your view around legality, but decriminalising should certainly be a pursued avenue and I do think a conversation is worthwhile about the savings and revenue that could bolster, the ability to concentrate on methamphetamine and harder drugs having negative effects. There’s been a real effort over time to demonise street drugs and endorse pharmaceutical drugs, but neither are better than the other in my view, risks go with them all just as they do with the other drug that’s legal for consumption in alcohol

I'm completely against legalizing cannabis, and for a number of reasons which were covered in the thread debating it before we got hacked and deleted.

I am in favour of exploring alternative medicines (or actually revisiting some traditional natural remedies that have been dismissed previously).

Fascinating the amount of places that have altered to having steps to do with decriminalisation, personal cultivation or medicinal. The places that now allow personal cultivation are Switzerland, Thailand, Canada, Uruguay, Spain, Mexico, Germany, Israel, Denmark, Chile, Portugal, South Africa, Belgium, some states in America, parts in Australia, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Colombia, Luxembourg, Malta. Some have had some negative effects but largely they’ve had minimal issues. I can recall apart of your apprehension was about the contradiction that we were at that stage about to go smoke free and allowing another form of smoking. Again it’s your prerogative to feel how you do, I’d be interested to see the public sentiment if that referendum was held currently with the financial issues the country is facing

It has to be more than we can make some quick bucks from it and I doubt very much that would even be in the majority of people's thinking. There are several other considerations that need to be made as well other than money and smoke free NZ.

I support use for pain relief but not as an escape from reality. I support decriminalisation but not legalisation.

The argument against full acceptance is the social and health harms from addiction - the same reasons for fazing out smoking.

Interesting.... but I wonder where the articles/blogs from the left are about the fact that if the number of māori seats were decided on the same ratio of registered māori rolls votes per seat as per general roll, there would actually be 6 māori seats... not the seven current ones. The elections already favour the left in that the already have a numerical advantage over the parties on the right.

Here's the base figures from the Electoral Commission:
Number of people enrolled on the māori roll: 282,000
Number of māori seats: 7
Average māori electoral size: 40,285

Number of people enrolled on the General roll: 3.17 mil.
Number of general seats: 64
Average general roll electoral size: 49,531

If the same ratio of māori seats were applied to the general roll, there would be 79 electoral general seats (3,170,000/40,285), instead of the current 64. Or if the same ratio for the general roll was applied to the māori roll, there would only be 6 māori seats (282,000/49,531), instead of the current 7 māori seats.

That said, most of the time I'm pleased that the left has a number advantage over the right.... it's just not acknowledged.

Alcohol is always going to what such measures are held against and interesting enough, referendums that came around alcohol were to do with banning it rather than legislation in prohibition. 1919 was the closest NZ came to prohibition with concerns raised by religious groups and Woman’s groups, I’m not too sure whether an escape from reality or a financial gain was the reason alcohol survived those referendums through the late 1800’s-early 1900’s? We still see harms of a portion of society through the cause of alcohol and will continue to, but rules over time have been put in place to try and limit the worst outcomes. I’m not someone that takes a view of because some can’t control themselves that all of society patches price. The amount of growing operations that have been found out in the last year or so have been huge, the last seizure was about 10 tonnes. That should tell them that there is huge demand. They’re never going to beat the appetite for demand, even trump blowing boats up that are apparently cartels. Reagan announced a war on drugs years ago and it’s been a failure, time to go back to the drawing board
