📝 Summary:

The thread centers on New Zealand's upcoming election, primarily debating the economic management and policy differences between the center-left Labour government and center-right National/ACT opposition. Key criticisms target Labour's fiscal stewardship, citing ballooning government expenditure #7#272, housing unaffordability, and unfulfilled promises like KiwiBuild and dental care expansion #16#12. A user #7 highlighted Labour's annual 9% spending growth versus 1.5% under previous governments, arguing this fueled inflation. National's tax-cut policy faced scrutiny over funding gaps and legality, with user #215 questioning Luxon's reliance on "trust me" assurances.

Luxon drew heavy criticism after a contentious interview where he struggled to defend policy details #194#199#211, while Willis faced backlash for her economic credentials. Hipkins garnered fleeting praise for articulation but was ultimately seen as representing poor governmental outcomes #45#119. A trusted user #308 presented expert economic analysis contradicting Treasury optimism. Early fringe discussions on candidates' rugby allegiances gave way to substantive policy critiques, culminating in grim Treasury forecasts discussed in posts #271#304#308. User #168 also revealed concerns about Labour rushing regulatory changes to entrench policies pre-election.

Seymour is using his position to try and silence opposition to his bill. This is someone who purports to believe in free speech, but only his kind of free speech.

ACT are truly an authoritarian far right party pushing an extreme ideology.

He should be called out for his lies and attacks on all New Zealanders.

Those that blindly ignore, carry on oblivious and ignorant. Whatever Wiz. You asked for information, I've provided plenty of it, you ignore and make shit up like you always do, I'll carry on with a great Saturday.
Get out of your rabbit holes and conspiracy theorists and get in the real world. I’ve read the bill and cannot see ANY of the issues your quack media tries to imply. From the a-political AI:

Prompt: what is the regulatory standards Bill?

‘The Regulatory Standards Bill, currently before the New Zealand Parliament, aims to improve the quality of legislation by establishing a set of "Principles of Responsible Regulation". These principles will serve as a benchmark for new laws and existing regulations, promoting transparency, accountability, and good law-making practices. The Bill also proposes mechanisms for assessing the consistency of legislation with these principles and for independent review of regulations.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  • Principles of Responsible Regulation: The Bill outlines key principles that all legislation should adhere to, covering areas like the rule of law, individual liberties, property rights, and the role of courts.

Transparency and Accountability: It requires those proposing and creating regulations to certify their compatibility with the principles, increasing transparency in the regulatory process.

Independent Review: A proposed Regulatory Standards Board would provide independent oversight, reviewing regulations for consistency with the principles, particularly in response to stakeholder concerns.

Ministry for Regulation: The Bill also supports the Ministry for Regulation in its work to improve the quality of regulation by providing information and oversight.

    Focus on Good Law-Making:
The Bill aims to ensure that regulations are effective, efficient, and proportionate, with benefits exceeding the costs of implementation.

A surge in public opposition to the Government’s proposed Regulatory Standards Bill has been undermined through the spreading of wrong information, a public law expert says.

“Subpart 5, sections 24, 25 and 26, make it very clear that absolutely nothing in the act can found litigation by a private individual. It just can’t. There is an explicit clause in there that says you can’t use the bill, which would include the principles,” Eddie Clark, a senior lecturer in public law at Victoria University of Wellington, told Newsroom.

Clark said the full text of the bill makes clear that this principle (and others) do not create new legal rights or impose new legal obligations.

And Anne Salmond's comment at the bottom provides a much more succinct reply than I'm capable of

More NZ First based on policy but I don’t like their MPs personally. NZ before overseas interests; rural and economically focused but with a social element. Central.

The crux of this is that the bill would reinforce individual rights and hold the govt accountable.

The left like to push law through for the greater good and don’t want that accountability to the individual people. Makes social engineering and ideological changes harder to push through.

There is nothing to fear unless. Just a difference of ideology.

Let’s be honest, the left will repeal this bill when they get in won’t they, so not to much to worry about?

. Also what is the spike in early 2024?
Suspect that’s just a bit of employers advertising for people after new years (apparently the best time to catch candidates that want to do something new, in line with their New Year’s resolutions). At that point, inflation was high and unemployment low, so hard to find people. You can see a similar seasonal bounce in Jan 2025, though depressed economy, so a lower spike

A company I am associated with was part of that spike in 2024. No point in advertising pre-Xmas. Best to hold off until late jan
