Air NZ is great (but a bit expensive) You flown Jet Star?
The ferry's always seem to fuck out causing huge disruption.

Yeah, Jet Star has a bad rep for sure but I've heard they have improved their service in the last few months. I've flown Air NZ 7 times internationally last year and every flight was either delayed or in one case cancelled. IMO their service has deteriorated. Maybe since Luxon left
Domestic flights are very expensive. Depending on times it can be $400 for a return flight to Auckland from here and they advertise Sydney for $225 on sale
One thing that really bugs me is the increases during peak times and holidays. No justification for any increase like additional service or extra wages, just because they can. ComCom should deal with that

I can't defend the price rises - but I would always pick them over other airlines even if paying slightly more.
The key is Koru membership - makes the whole process much easier.

Domestic is over priced, no competition... but also has to be a challenging business to run. The Airports ramp up their costs too so it all spirals.

But it’s private medical centres using a private company’s system.

The govt isn’t set up to lead the innovation to make something like this. It would cost 10x as much work half as well and have more holes in the system.

The head company, Manage My Health Global, also runs similar systems in other countries based on software developed in NZ.

Most internal IT departments are shrinking. It's not a public sector thing. Yes, in general there are cycles in companies outsourcing IT or bringing it back in house. However most IT departments are generally leaner.

It is rare in IT that you need to throw bodies at an issue. A ransomware attack is one of them. Even then it would be under insurance and bringing in experts in specific fields. Speaking from experience (as a consultant) I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. A company ground to a halt. Trying to piece things back together again. Extremely long hours.

A website like this generally wouldn't be under IT. Usually it would be under another department or outsourced.

The issue is likely either a security fault with the site or something that should have been patched. You also get environments that are to risk adverse and don't want to approve the outage required to fix the risk. From experience after the fact you get a lot of people forgetting all of the actions that lead to the fault.

I know the ransom is for the stolen data. There would likely be other investigations going on to see if their access to the environment isn't just limited to the website.

Unfortunatley our Kiwi number 8 wire or she'll be right mentality has shifted to IT security. A lot of environments are still geared to traditional business threats like flood, fire, earthquakes, or hardware failure. Not modern threats like ransomware etc. A lot of security proposals get rejected during budgeting, things need to be cut from the budget and it will get moved to next year.
