This is the second recent tell about Metcalf that exposes he is a footy Nerd.

It all makes sense to me now....why he got that spot at 7.....why him and Channel get along so well....why Metcalf played so dampened down at first, played within himself, put his running game away.

As a study of League (or a study of anything in the world) the most influential people in their lives are their teachers.
The thing about Nerds is they crave a good teacher that they can connect with and relate too, someone with similar passions and attention to detail. You can see where I am going with this, Andrew Webster is that type of very similar focussed football thinker that someone like Metcalf would have been looking for. Webster is someone that makes you feel as though no question is a stupid question. He is the opposite to a do as I say type.

I would have loved to have listened to the conversation between Metcalf and Webster about the half back role, obviously Webster would have asked why Luke wanted it, and Metcalf would have had a stats and metrics based answer that Webster could relate to.

CHT is a Nerd too, kinda makes so much sense that those two go nuts when they score a try or whatever, they clearly are kindred spirits, while Channels Nerdery is not footy, Metcalfs footyness would help Channel to to see the thinking side of the game he walked away from.

When Metcalf came out this season and stopped running, when just did the numbers as a half that kicks, I bet that was around an understanding he had with Webster that to be halfback he had to make these very specific metrics in the game, the kick chase stuff that the Warriors are known for under Webster.

Metcalfs defence would have been another non negotiable between him and Webster.

I can guarantee you that Webster said nothing about needing to line break or get X number of Try assists to hold the position, which is why all that stuff dissapeared from Metcalfs game as he determindly set out to acheive a pass mark in all the Webster must do's.

But the thing I like about Metcalf being a girly swat is that he needs a mentoring teacher, someone that understands him, someone that with talk nerd footy with him. Their relationship is what will keep Metcalf here more than any other considerations.

The one thing that sticks in my mind of his importance is his chase down of Taulagi with the score at 30-26 and momentum well and truly with them at magic round. That was more inspiring than his tries and try assists to me.
