Home detention. WOW what is the point.
Only encourages others to take advantage of the system
S has worked with a woman for over 25 years and knew her before her eldest daughter "H" was born, so S knew H all her life. H was on her way to see her boyfriend when a guy who as high and over twice the alcohol limit slammed his car into her at over an estimated 140 plus km/h in an 80km/h area. She died instantly.

This jerk was already on "home detention" and lost his license after pleading guilty to previous DUI charges. This time he got jail time even though his lawyer argued the judge should just give his more HD. Last week, he had a parole hearing but, because he's been in trouble while inside, still has to keep serving his sentence.

My point is that I thought that with the new government I would have expected these seemingly lenient sentences were a thing of the past. Seems not unfortunately.

The govt has tried to comment on sentences but gets slammed for interfering on the judiciary and judicial independence.

So the govt is fighting against out of touch judges by taking away cultural reports, ensuring mandatory minimum sentences, restoring the 3 strikes rules, allowing more prison beds, etc.

Can lead a judge to water but you can’t make ‘em drink.

Yes I understand.
This is the same party who slammed Labour for the lenient sentencing.

They havnt taken away cultural reports, what are you on about?

We were recently in the Gold Coast and was shocked by the youth crime.
One report was of a 14yo girl who had jumped bail in Vic. and was found in Qld in a stolen vehicle with the keys to 10 other vehicles and HOUSES ffs.
That’s scary. Hope they’ve got no ties to NZ as sad as it is to say. We’ll end up with them as 501’s. Think it’s a bit of a worry to house 10 year olds with adults if this is the situation in prison

You won't need one if you don't break the law. It is amazing how criminals, especially repeat offenders. can use cultural reports, upbringing and remorse to have sentencing so watered down they walk out the door and continue offending.
With respect Dean my original post on this subject was about how we voted for change & nothing has changed.

Or conversely it's amazing you can be born into privilege or famous hire the best legal teams & have watered down sentences - before this becomes another māori bashing thread.

Legal aid is available for those unable to afford paying lawyers and the selection of lawyers available is very similar, probably the same.
How do you think recidivist criminals that have never done a days work in their lives afford the likes of Ron Mansfield.

Northern Territory to return to jailing 10 year olds in Australia. Must be real issues with crime
Haha this debate is hilarious.

In all Australian jurisdictions, the age of criminal liability is 10. This means that no child below the age of 10 can be arrested, summonsed or found guilty of a criminal offence.
