Press release:

Wizards demolition squad is together now trialling combinations in preseason. Without the focus on recruitment the team is using the extra time to solidify selections.

Gallen has reported a minor hamstring strain but we’re pumping in the ‘totally legal’ peptides and he should be ready come finals.

Ridgy is leading training with his competitiveness showing through. Betham has almost decked the cock shit multiple times but the coach is channeling that competitiveness into high intensity training sessions.

The immortal Meninga is practising his big fend and boasting he’s going to score a hat trick running over his opposition centres. Jones is threatening to us him to draw defence and cut out big Mel so the even bigger Vatuvei can steamroll 3 tries himself!

The team is pumped and can’t wait for the playoffs!
Wouldn't surprise me if Manu was supplying Ridgy with a few

I keep coming across references to Tonie Carroll while researching other players as part of my consultancy reviews.
Sounds like he was as mean as they come and an elite? How do you guys remember him?

What do people define as elite vs a great player vs a very good player vs NRL quality vs whatever else?

Big mal is gonna get a hell of a shock when he runs out and realizes he’s actually quite small these days.

I share a mutual friend with Shaun berrigan and he was talking about Carroll once- this is way back when they were both at the broncos and he said Carroll was the strongest guy he ever played with or against and that if he wanted he would’ve been the best player in the world but some days he just didn’t want to.

I was a bit young but I remember we were filthy when he turned his back on Kiwis jersey. He was that good that Aussies wanted a kiwi.

Why I'm surprised I got him for so cheap.
I think he is a good get by you. He keeps coming up in the readings as a feared opponent.

What do people define as elite vs a great player vs a very good player vs NRL quality vs whatever else?
All highly subjective but how’s this for an attempt:

Top shelf - immortals (and future immortals)

Elite - would be best player in their position in their decade. Should be hall of fame material

Great player - a dally M winner in their position in any year

Very good player - played 200+ NRL or equivalent games

Solid NRL player - 100-200 games, no real accolades.

NRL player - up to 100 games

Within that there’s lots of grey. A player like say Aaron Woods can win a couple of Daly M’s but be bog average the rest of his career and is seen as soft and just a solid NRL player.

Obviously depends on different levels, eg a great club player may be just solid at the world game level.

My levels I use

1) Immortals - the actual immortals listed by the NRL all 8 of them or whatever.
2) NRL Hall of Fame - To 50 players - your Mark Grahams
I call both of these levels All Time Greats - with extra reverence in my voice given to the immortals
3) Elite Players - Strong Test match players - Not in the Hall of Fame but not far off it. Would be in the top 100 lists of NRL players since 1990 I have been reading in newspaper articles
4) Strong Players - I don't know maybe the likes of Kevin Tamati, Kurt Sorenson.
5) Regulation test match level player but an elite an NRL level - Cam Murray for example.
6) Poor Players - Good at NRL level would be exploited internationally RCG for example.

Our criteria match quite closely.
