Post Match Warriors v Storm - [Round 15, 2024]

Boys had a real crack in this game. When you're playing Melbourne, you need: i) to be at your best for 80 mins, ii) luck. Regarding ii) luck went against us with injuries and sin binnings, just like in Melbourne last year, which ultimately took victory off the table. Regarding i), we were perfect for the first 20 mins in this game. But as webby said in the presser, it's about implementing the game plan for longer periods of game and managing periods of momentum swings when they happen. We need to be better at this when we run into them again, which I'm sure we will during the final series.

One thing I noticed about the Storm on Saturday is that all their players accepted the ref's decisions without complaining and left it to their captain to do the whining and complaining. The warriors and for that matter all the other teams in the league have all their players cry blue murder and sometimes yell and swear at the ref in anger.
Who do you think is likely to get better decisions from the refs on an ongoing basis.
Bellamy seems to be the only coach whose attention to detail includes coaching his players on how to respond to bad refereeing decisions.
Bellamy outcoached Webster on Saturday. It was a close match but the old fox out coached the young hound.
(Including organising a guard of honour for his players to be clapped on to the field by past Storm Legends.)

I agree that Bellamy exploited our weaknesses - bombs to Pompey, Barney/Tohu glides etc

But why would the Storm players want to complain if the ref let go 90% of their penalties? That's like a murderer who got away choosing to complain to the police constantly afterwards. Warriorholic at the ground said they were offside the ENTIRE game. Plus the 2 early shocking calls we had to use cap challenges, marker square and got pinned, the arm swing on Egan's face, disallowed try/double knock on for Jazz to go back 2 tackles to give them a momentum changing penalty for a legit blockbuster TMM tackle (not even cited at all), Grant walking around the PTB to disrupt our red zone attack without even getting penalized, those were not 50/50 calls.

Then you remember they're competing with other sports in Melbourne, and they got away and destroyed championships dreams of other teams by cheating in 2007-2009.

Those cap challenges still piss me off, it's like the receptionists charging you $500 instead of $5, twice, and you had to check receipts, complain to the manager, to get the refund; later when she gives you the incorrect coins for changes for a separate transaction, the manager refuse to look at it because there was no paper trail.

We can acknowledge we need to be 10% better than the Storm to win, but we can also acknowledge the refs are just shocking every time we played them, even the 1st half of R2 game and last year's match, same energy

Are there are other factors at hand? Of course there are. One of them being referees favour the elite top four teams.
But I see behaviour towards the ref as something we can control and learn from Melbourne.

Webster was astute in the presser. Very very astute. Webster said every mistake we made went severely punished by Melbourne with no forgiveness.
He will think about this and have us more ready next time.
Like no other sport I have seen coaching in rugby league seems to impact the result heavily.
We have a fantastic coach who is taking us places. Let’s put Saturday night down to a lesson in his journey.
Good things will come from this loss if we learn lessons which we will.

It's funny you mention behaviour to the refs - As I recall Kearney had the club go on some sort of PR campaign on the field to try and cement the club as "the good guys of the league" to address the perception of bias against us.

Three factors
1. Melbourne are coached supremely to push the boundaries of gamemenship
2. The referees seem to favour the stars of the game and allow themselves to be manipulated - Cameron Smith was basically their referee - Harry Grant has picked up where he left off / he was pretty much in 80mins of dialogue with the ref on Saturday. Tedesco does it too.
3. If you've even worked in an Australian company as a New Zealander - theres is definitely something subconscious going on where NZ is looked down on by Australian (with a twist of fondness maybe)

Let's not even mention the convict roots & how that is infused in the Australian sporting mentality...

Hughes was mouthing off to the ref plenty- the one that pissed me off was the “send him for an hia” after he wasn’t pinged for a blatant high tackle on one of our guys.

Honestly I went to watch the replay painfully, and the Storm players were either complaining when we scored or freaking mid air while kicking Jackson, or you have f***ing NAS and gang standing right next to the ref

I think a better example for your mannerism would be the nice guy Black Caps taking it in the mouth like an NRL hooker (FYI Wade)

Good posts CWC, the ref apologists need to get with it tbh. The only thing as long as our losing streak to the Storm, is the games against the storm where we 'don't get the rub of the green' from the refs. It's absolutely a farce.

The shocking thing was listening to @Fonzie letting his frustration out on the This Warriors Life podcast ep.

He never blames the refs and really pushes back on that but even he was annoyed.

The thing that really grinds me is the sin binning. The players were still assessing challenging the call and Storm quick plays the ball and refs says yep go. That should never have happened. There needs to be a clear line on when Captain's challenges have ended so that players aren't disadvantaged trying to challenge a bad call.

I have waited two days to simmer down.
Here is my considered opinion in the absence of negative emotions.
On the Montoya sin bin the Melbourne player felt Montoya's hands around the ball and realised it was two in the tackle so the Melbourne player just dropped the ball and gave it to the gormless Montoya. I reckon the Storm cooked up that play just like they have cooked up all sorts of gamesmanship tactics over the years. The penalty then unexpectedly became a sin bin through a bone headed Montoya not retreating ten metres. And that was the game,
The score was 18-20 before Montoya's sin bin and it was anyone's game.
Reffing did not cost us this match because despite the reffing it was 18-20 until the Sin bin at the 53 minute mark.

We lost this match due to Melbourne storm trickery.

That is my view. We are still on track this season and were probably unlucky to lose on the weekend. Most pundits in Australia are calling it a close game.
