NRL NRL 2025 General Recruitment Thread

Yeah I don't want to die on my hill either. You could be right. I don't know for sure about my answer but it is what I believe.

I don't know what you mean by this though: "Going, I believe was supplementary in 2023, as basically the full time NSW cup players are." We are talking about the NRL top 30 list and the development lists. I have never heard of a supplementary list?

Anyway maybe we leave it there I am just connecting dots from what have heard. Chat GPT doesn't know, which means it is nowhere on the Internet, so both of us are to be forgiven for not being sure.
I’ll have a go at my understanding of the cap system.

Clubs have a squad of say 100 players including NSW cup, jersey flex, etc. there is no limit or cap on the payment to all signed players.

From there the top 30 highest paid players become included in the 30 player salary cap with rules about minimum pay and NSW cup cap, etc.

Player 30 say Lussick could be paid the NRL minimum $120k . But player 31-35 could also be paid $120k (as long as you don’t exceed the NSW cup cap).. This can be how the rich clubs have so many excellent players outside the cap.

If the club signs a superstar player and have the cap space player 29 becomes player 30 and player 30 just joins the group outside the top 30. Based of course around deadlines (top 24 locked in round 1; top 30 June 30th).

Hence the top 30 is more a ‘on paper’ living thing until deadlines rather than spots that are filled up and fixed.

It’s also how a $200k player ‘inside the top 30’ but outside the deadlines can be let go mid year and their part salary could be below what what the 30th player will get ($100k paid being below the $130k of player 30) so there salary is outside the top 30 (even if they are listed as a top 30 on paper). The released player was free within the cap as he was only the 35th highest paid player. This is how Lussick was let go now despite technically still being ‘top 30’ at the moment based on pay and probably how Walker was released last year with no cap issue.

That’s my understanding and I could also be totally wrong 🤣
