Sport Confidential: Reed Mahoney shopped to North Queensland Cowboys by third party

Further fuelling speculation that Reed Mahoney is on the nose at Belmore comes the revelation that the hard-nosed hooker was shopped to an NRL rival in the off-season.


Sport Confidential can reveal that the departure of NSW Origin rake Reece Robson to the Sydney Roosters from 2026 saw Bulldogs hooker Reed Mahoney quietly shopped to the Cowboys.

In the wake of Robson announcing he had signed a four-year deal with the Roosters in December, the Cowboys were contacted by a third party offering the services of Mahoney.

The Cowboys fielded the approach early in the New Year and were informed the Bulldogs were open to the prospect of an early release for the former Queensland Origin squad member to free up salary cap space.

Cowboys coach Todd Payten discussed the possibility with the club’s recruitment chiefs before ruling out a formal play for Mahoney, who is contracted to Canterbury until the end of 2026.

There was speculation Mahoney was on the nose at Belmore but Canterbury football boss Phil Gould insists the controversial rake is a key part of the Bulldogs’ plans.

Cant help but feel the Tigers are fucking this up.

Who knows what the conversations were like behind the scenes I guess, but there is still 6 months and a bit before he can even sign with another team, and the Tigers are looking better than they have in forever. Coming out with this feels like burning a bridge that could have still be salvaged.

Yeah when I first seen him play I thought he will be a future great or top echelon player.
The more I see of him the less I see that.
He has to be the greediest player in the comp.
Will still be a good player but a Million a season for him at 20 years old is a lot.
I get Benji needs to win games but playing Fainu would benefit them in the long run.
Chuck Galvin at 13 to use him in the middle and to run which is his strength.

An 18/19 year old in his first year as a half, playing for the lowly Tigers had 16 try assists in his first year, and he's over rated?!

He was 13th for try assists last year, and has started well this year, and already had 5 this year (both our halves have 6 combined).

Dudes an absolute weapon, and will be an above average half for the next 10-15 years imo.

Most clubs (including us) would give him a mill a year from 2027 if he wanted to join their team

He was 13th for try assists last year, and has started well this year, and already had 5 this year (both our halves have 6 combined).

Causing division in the team for their own ends. The leaking of the message which called Benji's coaching into question is really selfish. I would have him in reserve grade unless a trade offer blew me out of the water. So sad because he was like the perfect half for the tigers.
