Staff Bio

Beginning his legendary career in the sport as a player with the Penrith Panthers, Newtown Jets, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, and South Sydney Rabbitohs, Phil Gould began coaching with the Bulldogs in 1988.

Gould would lead the Bulldogs to the 1988 NSWRL Premiership, before leaving to coach another of his former clubs, the Panthers, in 1990.

Again finding immediate success, Gould took the Panthers to the 1990 Grand Final, losing to the Canberra Raiders, and the 1991 Grand Final, this time defeating the Raiders.

In 1992, Gould took the New South Wales head coaching job, leading the Blue's to three consecutive series wins. Gould and the Blue's were whitewashed in 1995 by Paul Vautin's Maroons 3-0, despite Queensland being huge outsiders.

Gould would step down from the Blue's role after winning the 1996 series, and he would later step down from the Sydney Roosters head coaching job as well in 1999, after five seasons, moving into a coaching director position with the club.

As Coaching Director, overseeing rookie coach Ricky Stuart, the Roosters would go on to make the grand final in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004, winning the 2002 grand final over the Warriors.

In 2002, Gould returned to the Blue's position, winning two series, and drawing the third, before stepping away from coaching for good.

Returning to the Panthers in 2011 as General Manager, Gould would help build the Panthers pathways, and whilst he departed the club in 2019, the club would go on to make the 2020 Grand Final, and win three consecutive premierships from 2021-2023.

Gould would assist the Dragons in their end-of-year review in 2020, before joining the Warriors as a club-wide consultant, specialising in pathways and development. Under Gould's watch, the Warriors signed Reece Walsh, and brought back club legend, Shaun Johnson.

After less than a year in the position, Gould would be released from his Warriors contract to join the Bulldogs once again, now as General Manager, a position he holds to this day.

Gould has also featured as an analyst for Channel 9 throughout his career.
