That must be why we aren’t seeing many ram raids anymore either. Great that member of the staff feels safer, but is it really two extra security guards as reported that’s having this cause? They must be two bad bastards to have sorted it out. At the same time an elderly woman attacked with a chair at Tauranga hospital leading up to Christmas so it’s easy to cherry pick an article citing two extra security guards as a saviour. It’s bliss with the government on school holidays at the moment.

5 extra at Middlemore and between 2-5 at 24 other hospitals with incidents halving (not all gone). Must be much more visible and available when needed. Nurses must be rapt to have a govt that supports them.

As I said, get the fundamentals right (violence wont be tolerated) but Rome wasn’t built in a day as there is much still to get right.

As I said, by the next election hopefully we should see significant improvements in lots of areas. Much to be positive about if your open to that mindset

Having a government that supports nurses is an odd statement considering they’ve knocked on the head any drop in lung cancer that would have been achieved in the future by by what was proposed for 2025 onwards. That’s not support of the health sector at all. The government and others can say that hiking the price every opportunity is having the greatest outcomes but it doesn’t recognise the addiction factor and those that can ill afford to smoke.

Wiz, I’m somewhat perplexed by you posting this article as if it supports something that the Government has achieved.

Reti announced the new funding on 21 December so a reasonable assumption would be that the extra resource came on stream on 22 December.

Being as generous as one can be let’s assume that it had a 100% success in that there were no incidences for the rest of the month.

So what do the numbers tell us?

In 2022 there were 0.71 recorded incidences per day (22/31)

In the period 1/12/23 to 21/12/23 there were 0.62 recorded incidences per day (13/21)

Obviously if any of those 13 incidences occurred in the period 22/12/23 to 31/12/23 then the rate would be less than 0.62/day.

The numbers show that the incident rate was dropping prior to announcement of the extra resource.

While I’m all for hospital staff being kept safe the story is no more than a puff piece and is only useful for fish & chip paper.

Little refusing to allow nurses into the country in a pandemic while our hospitals couldn’t cope over Winter is symbolic of the idiocy we have had to put up with. Little was out of his depth. Reti I trust to have a few more brains.

The new govt will have their own PR team onboard now as a perk of being Ministers so the pro govt propaganda will be rolling out.

The media’s senior media teams are on holiday and an intern team will be keeping articles ticking over. Those juniors fall for things like facts, media releases and positivity and haven’t yet learnt their role as gatekeeper to anything pro National.

Sound like Winston’s might have turfed out Jacinda’s besty Jessica, so the media might begin to bow down to their new overlords. Keep clearing out the dead journalistic wood Winston! Yes, I believe the salary will go up the same amount relative to inflation.

Labours big pay rises were smoke and mirrors when inflation is taken into account.

There was a net immigration loss of 13,000 kiwis to Australia in 2022. In National last term 2014 -2017 it was only 3,000 per year. Why are more people leaving the country under Labours smoke and mirrors wage gains than Nationals economic management?

(2023 is estimated to be an even worse 15,000 net loss)

To criticise National (fairs fair) they focused on paying back debt and getting ourselves ready for any future economic shock that came along (which covid did) by running surpluses. Using the surplus (excess tax) to pay down debt rather than investing back into social services.

That long term focus had a short term consequence of being tight with health, education, social services, etc budgets to run that surplus. Arguably they should have run smaller surpluses, invested more into health, etc and people would have been happier. I think they mentioned this themselves in hindsight.

I don’t think it had as big a bearing on house prices as people think.

High prices are a worldwide trend. Housing using to be based on 3 times a single persons income because only 1 person worked in the house. It has shifted to about 4 x a household double income because that’s the new normal.

A bigger mistake was the quantity of immigration, although Key believes we need a 10m population for scale. Doesn’t work if you don’t provide the infrastructure though aye…

I thought it was a driver with all the reports of local buyers being outbid from offshore, albeit anecdotal. A lot of them were effectively money laundering according to the Panama papers, but I'm getting a bit conspiracy nut there. Ever read them?

He told my parents one time that Labour gets the economy into trouble by overspending and National sorts it out by cutting spending until there’s enough money for Labour to make big expensive promises at Election time which people decide they’d like after years of austerity under National.

Basically, people swing from one to other, not usually used on what is best for the country but what is best for them. Most voters are greedy… they either vote to get a share of what others have or to protect what they do have.
