Something to think about for those who like the idea of having a wealth tax in NZ. If Manuel Villar, the Philippines property developer, paid the proposed wealth tax of the Greens or the TPM, he would have paid $250,000,000 in wealth tax under the Greens policy or $800,000,000 in wealth tax under the TPM policy despite his net worth dropping over 80% in the last 12 months.

Why? Because a wealth tax is one of the fewest forms of tax that doesn't tax on realised gains (either through active or passive income).

The new "bank of Mum and Dad".... parents and grandparents are moving away in droves from giving money as a deposit for their children and instead starting to use "off set" mortgages where the relatives keep "ownership" of their money and the children use "gain" the use of the interest to reduce their effective interest rates down to shorten the length of the loans as more principle is repaid each month.

In some cases, it has the potential to reduce the length of a 30-year loan by between 10 - 15 years, saving the borrower tens if not hundreds of thousands in interest... or giving them greater equity sooner to, heaven forbid, buy an investment property.

It also means the money is still available for the parents/grandparents.... it just doesn't earn them any interest.

Far safer than giving or lending the money to the children/grand children.

And, another way to get into housing faster.... there's two families (two brothers with the wives and children) renting the house next door. Each family pays half the rent and they pay the same amount each month as additional payments into their KiwiSaver accounts. Their intention is to then buy a property together and live in that for 5-10 years before selling it and dividing the equity equally to use to purchase their own houses. And, they're blue collared workers who install A/C units and roofing/wall insulation.

I posited this question here a while ago, worth asking again in the context you've raised above Mike - for those on the right on here, how much is enough wealth for someone? 2 million? 10? 12? 20 even?

Would you (whoever considers this) be happy with 20 million?

How much can we honestly say we need in the rest of our lifetimes to be comfortable?

This is a nonsense question with far more variables to consider than your simplistic approach.

happy new year to you too. It's a simple question for you Inruin. Your own personal wealth for example. No drama if you don't want to answer.

For me personally, in my position, mortgage free and two million for the rest of my years would be wonderful. That's not factual, but that would be wonderful, if of course other factors such as inflation etc.

Where i'm kinda going is pointing out the obvious disproportionate amount of wealth accelerating rapidly upwards that doesn't seem to incur any kind of resistance or comment from the likes of yourself.

Just because you didn't ask, here's an example of an entitled right wing billionaire for 2026
