We’re renewing a consent for a septic system under Auckland council.

As part of the process 17 local Mana whenua have to be contacted to see if they have an interest and would like to submit a cultural report at our expense.

This is an existing septic system, running for over 15 years creating domestic type effluent all handled on site, that just needs a periodic reconsenting.

Disband this whole legalised extortion please National.

If central government gets involved, who is answerable to whom? The council whinges that Wellington starved them of their budget. Wellington whinges that the council aren't spending wisely

Cue the finger pointing and bloating / control of central government.

I'm a fan of small, but very accountable governments. A council with a narrow remit (rubbish, roading, parks, water, libraries), but 100% accountability to its rate payers

Democracy works at a national level with scale and where voters are engaged.

Locally, no body knows any candidates and only a 1/3 of voters bother voting. Who knows what you get or what they stand for. That’s doesn’t create a mandate for the people elected in when only 15% of possible voters may have voted for them.

How about the elected officials propose a budget eg rubbish 20%; water 20% library’s 10%; public transport 10%, etc.

Then electronically each individual voter can change the percentages which their individual rates go towards (but must still = 100%). Eg I make public transport 0% and water 30%. Ultimate democracy!

Ps I’m paying council $5k base fee to recomply the existing system. And another $5k for an engineer to handle the council BS.

I dont know if it's checks and balances or some sort of grift, someone has to keep an eye on you exploiters polluting our waterways

Disagree. You can’t vote for lower rates, councils just won’t do it.

They have a monopoly and they all reference each other to justify higher charges in an endless spiral loop.

If they focused on the basic they can easily keep to inflation but fall back on blaming ‘years of underinvestment’ to prioritise nice to haves.
