The Nats idea to put a limit on how much council rates can be raised is a simplistic approach without a lot of thought to the consequences…. Councils will simply privatise, go down user pays routes and increase their other levies and fees to suit.
Watch as subsidises to public transport is reduced, free and subsidised pool and library services become user pays, reserve and development contributions rise along with resource consent and building consent application fees and water rates rise…. basically everything else will go up to cover what extra revenue rates increases over 4% would have generated.
