📝 Summary:

The thread centers on New Zealand's upcoming election, primarily debating the economic management and policy differences between the center-left Labour government and center-right National/ACT opposition. A user #7 highlighted Labour's annual 9% spending growth versus 1.5% under previous governments, arguing this fueled inflation. National's tax-cut policy faced scrutiny over funding gaps and legality, with user #215 questioning Luxon's reliance on "trust me" assurances.
Leadership competence emerged as a critical theme, particularly in later posts. Luxon drew heavy criticism after a contentious interview where he struggled to defend policy details #194#199#211, while Willis faced backlash for her economic credentials. Hipkins garnered fleeting praise for articulation but was ultimately seen as representing poor governmental outcomes #45#119. A trusted user #308 presented expert economic analysis contradicting Treasury optimism. Infrastructure issues—like Wellington's water crisis and the dental school staffing shortage—were cited as examples of systemic mismanagement #235#12. Early fringe discussions on candidates' rugby allegiances gave way to substantive policy critiques, culminating in grim Treasury forecasts discussed in posts #271#304#308. User #168 also revealed concerns about Labour rushing regulatory changes to entrench policies pre-election.

Hideous incident as a result of likely prolonged domestic abuse that’s seen a 6 month old and another child stabbed by a 34 year old. Accounts of the male dragging a female across the street and this the result. I believe there’s something that can’t be repaired in someone to harm children. Another incident of a police car rammed in Nelson overnight, to which the officers have critical injuries. Another in Ōpōtiki recently looking like a trend could be emerging, though not of a police car in this instance
I got breath tested in the afternoon on Christmas Day…

Yelled at them to go home because it’s Christmas, as I drive off! 🤣

I feel there has been a degree of apathy that has crept in to society around the police. I hope this spurs on a better appreciation for police and a tougher stance by all of society towards lawlessness
I hope the driver is charged with murder and convicted.
In this woke modern age it is usually manslaughter though.

Sounds like this piece of shit killed one of these kids
I know it's easy to make comment, and it doesn't specifically just relate to this news report, but why as a society do we shun away from reporting this type of behaviour. How have we regressed so far as people and communities that this sort of behaviour is turned s blind eye to? It goes on and on, from neighbours witnessing some of the things that were being done to Poor little Nia Glassie through to this latest event. Would it have made a difference? I don't know the answer to that. But sometimes it would surely. Having someone calling you out for your behaviour and often. Changing a culture of it's not my business will take time but we have to start. Being shocked at the latest news report is nothing but an acceptance of it happening again.

Fear of reprisal maybe, sounds like a dangerous psycho. Guess we don't know if other neighbours reported the violence.

To go with it, a female officer. Probably just coincidence but crime against females at present is staggeringly high. Last Saturday a female’s body was found at the jetty at Foxton Beach. The trend has continued since that lady was stabbed on a bus and killed
Not sure if a few similar incidents are a pattern or just a wider decline into general lawlessness

And surely this must be an issue where an agreement can be made with cross party support. But it also takes more than the government to effect change when it comes to this type of behaviour.
Agree entirely.

The “Getting tough on crime” mantra garners votes but does nothing to stop crime.

Does anyone think the arsehole in Nelson or the arsehole In Hamilton were in the slightest bit deterred by what punishment they will cop when they are convicted

Yes it's a longer arc of decline than political cycles
What’s the underlying causes?

1 - General increased stress (5 years of covid and recession)?
2 - long term lack of progress for the middle class (globalism, house prices rising faster than wages, etc)?
3 - A more liberal and accepting society (eg. anti smacking bill)?
4 - a break down of long term morals and standards (back turned on religious fundamentals)?
5 - an increasingly complex society leaving more who can’t keep up on the scrap heap?
6 - it’s actually always been bad and is slowly getting better but we’re still shocked when things happen?
7 - All the above?

I think social engineering has probably been a cause as much as any potential fix. Strong leadership is what is needed and I don't think any of our political parties have that to offer.
Dunno if social engineering is a cause, the decline of the west started in the 80s when the neoliberals hired Reagan, a literal Hollywood actor, to sell the biggest heist on the working class since Stalin's oligarchs.

I don't agree about the tough on crime comment. It has been shown to work in other countries and even as recently as last decade in Manurewa.

You are right though about these guys you mentioned. That is an even bigger issue to deal with. There will always be bad examples like this regardless. Perhaps some sort of intervention prior to the extreme violence we see at the end? It's a tough one because quite often these types of people have been bought up in their own poor circumstances.
