What if we had cgt, made pot legal and tax it, don't give landlords tax breaks beyond first 2 houses... I'm sure there are other thingsThat is the issue, we don't have the $$$$$, so the current system will go backwards.
I wouldn't bank on getting that $30k back to re-invest ... doesn't really work like that unfortunatelyThe rising cost of services like health, which has jumped from costing about $20 billion in the 2020/21 year to nearly $30b (about $6000 per citizen) in the current year despite long wait times and lower services.
It’s expected Seymour will question whether Kiwis should have the option to give up their right to the public healthcare system and take their $6000 for their own private insurance.
That $30k for my 5 person family would get us a lot of private health insurance ($10k for full cover for my family? with $20k left over?). Makes you question WTF the health system has been doing, even if you believe in public healthcare.

I wouldn’t bank on getting much more with a CGT either. What if we had cgt, made pot legal and tax it, don't give landlords tax breaks beyond first 2 houses... I'm sure there are other things
It seems to me that there is enough money for the government to spend but it's just not being spent enough on the right things and when it is, not efficiently enoughI wouldn’t bank on getting much more with a CGT either.
We increase the tax rate by a huge percentage in 6 years with nothing to show for it so why would another lump sum in tax take make any difference.
Seems the big tax grab actually just damaged the real economy.
The Australian energy crisis is about to blow up. But it’s basically the same thing. More expenditure, worse results. Same cause, complete incompetence from elected officials. It seems to me that there is enough money for the government to spend but it's just not being spent enough on the right things and when it is, not efficiently enough
Should just get some Alexa Echo's set up in the forests. They’ve found that whale song spend. $4m

It also says the bulk of the $4m was spent on seed banking protocols and collection, but that doesn't make as good a headline as the whale song stuff. They’ve found that whale song spend. $4m

I missed that part, although the next paragraph is also tellingIt also says the bulk of the $4m was spent on seed banking protocols and collection, but that doesn't make as good a headline as the whale song stuff.
Just like a lot of things tbf. At least this is no longer being funded at all now! This topic is doing the rounds on X in the last 24hrs so posted in relevance. Definitely needs more transparency
Thanks this coalition. Take the blinkers off mate. They have conducted a war on the poor for the last year as well as austerity at the wrong time.‘New Zealand’s economy suffered the biggest hit in the world in 2024, HSBC says’

Well, I didn’t want to make it political but since you took the bait, the IMF predicted all this prior to the 2023 election, which we discussed about at length in this thread:Thanks this coalition. Take the blinkers off mate. They have conducted a war on the poor for the last year as well as austerity at the wrong time.
So Labour stuffed the economy, and prior to the election a reputable international external authorities predicted this year exactly correctly…International Monetary Fund, in its latest Regional Economic Outlook, predicts that next year the New Zealand economy will have the second-lowest growth of the 159 nations it surveys
But they got the forecast wrong - how does anyone place any credence in what these folk say?Well, I didn’t want to make it political but since you took the bait, the IMF predicted all this prior to the 2023 election, which we discussed about at length in this thread:

And now people with their head in the sand are trying to rewrite history and blame National. Looks like some of us have their eyes wide open, keep up and know exactly what’s happening before it happens and some others are blinkered and bewildered about why things happen and lash out at the easiest target because they just don’t understand
