Itā€™s not even opposing parties, we now have millions of dollars poured down the drain because national now decides to scrap the Christchurch cathedral restoration after national previously decided to persevere with it. To think all these years later that place still isnā€™t completely rebuilt is unfathomable. The money wasted by incoming and outgoing governments and previous ones with the scrapping of things after substantial taxpayer money has been poured in needs some sort of bipartisanship going forward or it will continue to be mass wastage
I didnā€™t think any government should provide anymore money for the restorationā€¦ actually, I think weā€™ve provided too much already. Through all their leasehold properties in green leaf suburbs like St Johns and Parnell, the Anglican Church has more than enough funds to pay for the restorationā€¦. itā€™s just that the Auckland Synod are unwilling to share itā€™s tax free wealth.

Edit: looking at an article, the government arenā€™t willing to fund the shortfall of $60mil for the restoration of the cathedral. The Auckland Synod, according to their 2023 report has over $90 mil. in managed funds and investment properties. The ā€œcash strappedā€ Christchurch Synod has over $7 mil in managed funds.

This decision needed to be made years ago because itā€™s just a massive waste of taxpayer money, just like scrapping ferries being built and huge money poured into a smokfree 2025 campaign that will now not eventuate. Surely thereā€™s a better system because the taxpayer is just the fodder in the middle

That congestion charge does sum up politics. It is good when we propose it and bad when they do.

Didn't they have similar debates around changing the Resource Management Act?
Thereā€™s a huge amount of opposition to Nationalā€™s fast tracking legislation yet itā€™s an extension legislation introduced by Labour.

Again, depending on who is in government (Labour only fast tracked KO developments while National will sell of NZ to foreign oil and mining companies) as to whether people support the legislation or not.

Personally, I think both are wrong and the decisions as to how things should be fast tracked shouldnā€™t be with the hands of ministers (where Megan Woods was influenced by KO or current ones potentially influenced by lobby groups or donators) but that the Environmental Court should have been expanded and better funded to be able to make decisions faster and Councilā€™s forced to make decisions in a reasonable time and be required to justify their decisions before Environmental Commissioners to ensure they just donā€™t reject applications because the processing time is running out.

Iā€™d even like decisions on big projects removed from Councils and be considered by Environmental Commissioners with councils being able to make submissions like the rest of the public

But, for Godā€™s sake, donā€™t let ministers with the IQ of a gnat, sign off on projects!!!!

Wouldnā€™t it be nice if the main parties actually worked together for whatā€™s best for the country instead of whatā€™s going to get them enough votes at the next election. Iā€™m not meaning let the opposition run the country but work together to find acceptable long term strategies.

The problem is, getting approvals, planning and implimenting projects is almost impossible within the three year election cycle. So National decided on roads of national importance, which Labour stopped. Labour decided on a light rail system for Auckland and Cook Strait ferries, which National stopped.

Unless a party has a second term in Government, we seem to get nowhere.

Seymour is a neoliberal fascist. Of the rich, by the rich for the rich, he does a hitman job for National who escape the public backlash.

So called libertarians but they're really authoritarians in a very thin disguise.

I genuinely hope you post on a broader platform than just the NZ Warriors forum politics thread! Hard not to admire your passion for what you believe in, it would be a shame if your efforts donā€™t extend beyond thumping the table in here.

The church that owns it has $2.8b in assets and has more cash surplus than the govt.

Let them pay for it themselves rather than bludge off the govt.

Manufacture a recession. Pump more people into unemployment. Make it harder to get medicine, accommodation, even exist.

Then kick them in the teeth.

Why is accountability a kick in the teeth? If you tick all the boxes thereā€™s no affect at all.

Surely itā€™s being tough to be kind as ensuring beneficiaries are working to better themselves helps the beneficiary?

Or is it all just free money so teenagers can sit on the dole and play PlayStation laughing at us hard workers that support them?

Which is what they should have done many years ago rather than pumping the money into it they have since the Christchurch earthquake
To be fair, many years ago it was budgeted at $104m to replace it which funding was sorted forā€¦ and itā€™s now blown out to $250mā€¦

Similar to the ferries, people expect govt to just keep paying endlessly no matter what the cost?

Sorry did you say something? But seriously, all you're doing is quoting the neoliberal right wing playbook.

It's not a "level playing field" when you deliberately increase unemployment, keep wages low, house prices high, electricity unaffordable, health unaffordable, increase inequality immeasurably, cut the wrap around services and community help, remove the programmes to get people back into work, remove the addiction services, remove the only housing some people have, increase sentences, remove the slim opportunities afforded to non custodial sentences now is it Wiz?

Especially not a level playing field when the money "saved" by all of these cuts goes to enrich the already wealthy, the billionaire and corporate donors, national and act's landlord mates, entrenching a neoliberal system that's failed us a million times as a society.

Now is it Wiz? Given you love the right, and their neoliberal way of being, surely you genuinely want a "level playing field" - the neolib's mantra, right? But this lot, they ain't going to do that. See, it turns out that's a myth. A lie.

You can do better than dog whistling, but history doesn't hold out much hope.

- deliberately increase unemployment - itā€™s currently still below the long term average. Unemployment isnā€™t high

- keep wages low - arguably weā€™re in the shit now because we forced wages higher than inflation and productivity gains and itā€™s now correcting.

- house prices high - agree this is a big issue but National is doing more than any govt recently to fix the underlying supply issues

- electricity unaffordable - Jacindanomics in action. Banning oil exploration really working well for usā€¦

- health unaffordable - itā€™s free???? If you can get inā€¦

- increase inequality immeasurably - link?

- cut the wrap around services and community help - only failing ones that canā€™t show results.

- remove the programmes to get people back into work - only failing ones that canā€™t show results.

- remove the addiction services - only failing ones that canā€™t show results

- remove the only housing some people have - stats show less people are in emergency housing - great job!

- increase sentences - GOOD! Singapore tough on crime - no crime. labour soft on crime and crime exploded

- remove the slim opportunities afforded to non custodial sentences - do the crime get what you deserve. No one to blame but yourself.

Coming soon to a New Zealand near you - mass privatisation, mass wealth extraction and enrichment of the already wealthy, huge crime rate increases in an ever desperate population, health care only for the very rich, gated communities - the neolib dream.

On a not really lighter note, (I do truly hope all this doesn't come to pass but the ground work is being laid, there for all to see (those with an anti neo lib filter) here's atlas! Notice the attacks on the treaty? Removal of indigenous rights is straight out of their playbook. And remember this? https://www.badnewsletter.com/david-seymour-lies-about-the-atlas-network/

Serious question - what is atlas - I keep hearing it but I honestly donā€™t really know? Why should we fear it?

Is it a right wing group that promotes ideas and policy or does it have some nefarious purpose?

Is it all conspiracy theory or is there any evidence?

I honestly know nothing about Atlas except left leaning people keep bringing it up.
