Speed is like safety barrier or seatbelts - prevents fatalities once you have an accident and are important.

But stop the inattention and you stop the accident from happening in the first place.

The road to zero safety improvements, lowering speed limits, speed barriers, heavy policing with speed cameras, etc haven’t worked according to the stats.

Put police doing heaps more drink driving and drug checkpoints and you will get more results.

One of the really stupid changes recently has been the 30kph limit in CBD Auckland. You can’t even get up to 50 in the first place as there are lights, crossings, and buses parked everywhere and bus and cycle lanes forcing cars into single file traffic jams. Private cars are banned in Queen street.

So there was already a 30kph informal limit in place, just due to the heaving mess that the CBD has become
CBD has been ruined by homeless people and traffic engineers.

The application time for the role of running Otago University was the time Robertson was the finance minister.

Is it corrupt when a sitting Minister of Finance involved in funding the university was at the same time applying to run it and would the power imbalance affected the decision - particularly seen as he doesn’t fit the role as a non academic?

Funny, I remember a lot of people saying the same thing about Jim Bolger when he got the job of Chancellor at Waikato Uni.... but then the people making the comments were on the left and those defending his appointment were on the right.

I guess it's only corruption when it's someone from the opposition parties to the one people support getting a job.

TBH, I think there's as much chance of Robertson getting the job as payback for money going to Otago University as I think there is Bishop now receiving money from tobacco companies for pushing through favourable outcome for them.... zero to none!!!

As an old acquaintance of mine once said.
"It's only a rort if you're not in on it "

Is that you Winston?

Given the poster has provided no answers to previous questions around actual facts, and provided no links, and is firing out quotes like he's been hanging out with the platform and Winston Peters we can't really determine what's going on.

There had been some speculation that there may have been some more alleged shop lifting incidents involving Golriz, and now her court date has been pushed back as a fourth charge has been laid. I can see lawyers from both sides thinking this is advantageous for them….. with the defense saying that this is just a greater indication of how out of character this was while the prosecution will say it shows a habit and not stress related incidents.

I just hope, whatever the outcome, she continues to get the help she obviously needs.

Why am I not surprised that the current government is blaming the previous government for “an education crisis”. Because we’ve heard it all before.

Hipkin’s blamed the Ardern administration (while hoping we forgot he was education minister for part of that time) while, in 2018, Ardern blamed the Key government for the education crisis Labour inherited.

Here’s a novel idea….. fund education properly (what National won’t do) but expect and demand improved outcomes with that money (what Labour won’t do). Forget doing what appeals to your voter base and blaming everyone else and actually do what is best for the country.

BTW, that should also apply to social funding, housing, health, Defence, infrastructure, police, justice, environment, conservation… pretty much every service the government provides.

You would, of course, take the fun out of politics by making politicians co-operate and look at the long-term good for the country. Not what the election cycle dictates they should do. You'd also end up with a Grand Coalition. Which terrifies those of us who hate incrementalism. Because that's what a Grand Coalition would probably seal. Not that I'm overly complaining....

How much is properly?

While everyone agrees this is the solution it’s an open ended answer. If you doubled funding I believe we wouldn’t see much improvement. And as an example govt expenditure has almost doubled in the past 6 years.

We need to actually get more done with what we spend because more money isn’t equaling more teachers in the classroom - it’s been less!

Labour imploding now and turning on each other:

They wouldn’t crack down on gangs because they didn’t want to unfairly target Maori.

All the soft on crime/ soft on gangs/ Maori preferential treatment is true. Glad we have a mature govt now to sort the country out.
