Politics 🗳️ NZ Politics

Yeah the little I’ve heard of him I thought it was total crap but then I refuse to acknowledge nearly all music more recent than R.E.M & Pearl Jam. But also, why was there any need to politicise the evening?
they can wave as many flags as they want for all i care. i’ve got no problem with that, man.
i just don’t like him or his music.

i think music in general has always been political though.

a lot of good music anyway.

And I think that’s fair viewpoint to look at it from. I probably see it more as a cultural performance than a political one with Te Reo music gathering popularity, but the cultural and political aspects have become intertwined because of government bills and what not. I’ve personally always respected a person putting themselves out there whether my cup of tea or not when performing. You have to be good to at least be able to make a career of it and have fans. I agree regarding politics and music, Woody Guthrie’s guitar had this weapon kills fascists on it with tracks like this land is your land. Bob Dylan was probably his biggest successor and spent time next to his hospital bed. His tracks like subterranean homesick blues came from a more storytelling sense. Famous too because of the cards with the writing that he goes through as he sings the song and has been copied many times

just for clarity too, i have nothing against stan walker culturally or politically, i just don’t like him personally and i dont fuck with pop music.

it’s for simpletons so bereft of personality they need whatever the radio station tells them they like to help form some kind of identity.

it’s sad and i feel sorry for them.

I don’t lose much sleep over it. If it’s good, I like it, if it’s not, I don’t. What I think is good might be shit to someone else though and vice versa

All power to Stan and anyone who wants to do that, but I think it’s a bit shortsighted of kiwi musicians to give a reason for half their audience to dislike them. Fine if you’re some superstar where you have huge fan numbers

But hey, his choice, his music
The whole point of being an artist is to.....well....be an artist. All types - those who target commerciality to those who truly challenge from a point of originality as their foundation, this is what it is, and that should be celebrated even if you don't like the output :)

Great post. So your position must be that we celebrate all types of reactions and a diverse view of art, including calling it crap?

Maybe Bishop just thought the music was shit & wanted the world to know. Bob Dylan obnoxiously laughed the entire way through the first performance of Simon & Garfunkel he ever attended. Personally I’m a S&G fan every day over Dylan’s vocal dribble but each to their own.
Bishop loudly proclaimed it "performative bullshit" and got called out for being the dickhead he is.

Maybe try listening to the song and message before commenting eh?

Why exactly would "half the audience dislike him" over a song about being proud to māori, unity, language?

And why exactly would a protest cause them to be disliked when the message of Toitu Te Tiriti literally translates to "support and honour the treaty"?

A bit like Bishop, you guys seem to want to say the quiet part out loud.

Sure Stan's early pop music ain't great - but this song and performance is a unique cultural statement from our country.

I think you're a simpleton if you miss the message of the song in the current social and political climate.

Speaking of simpletons theres a prominent poster here spouting right wing drivel with a user name that quoted Rage Against The Machine. Now thats being a simpleton.

i didn’t mean the particular song haha.
i mean pop music in its entirety.
i don’t like stan walker personally because he’s a liar and a thief.

My post was about New Zealand musicians being political

NZ music is usually meh, and to bring political messaging into it halves an already small audience

But hey, some people like it so good luck to them

I bet you actually don't know very much about music, new zealand music, cultural identity & artistic expression in general.

This is the standard right wing middle age male response - almost laughably sheep like in it's thinking
