🤖 Thread Summary

The Warriors' victory over the Roosters is being celebrated by fans in this forum, with much discussion focusing on the team's "grind" and defensive effort that reminded some of the 2023 season. Several contributors highlighted individual performances, such as Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad's CNK impressive running game and the impact of young players like Ali Leiataua and Leka Halasima, Boats n Hoes #154773 suggesting Leka was man of the match. The improved bench and the energy the young players brought to the team are considered key factors in the win, Canonball #154789 pointing to a play highlighting the "yung bloods." There are varying perspectives on the halves pairing, with some criticizing their attack and others praising their improvements and potential, MrFrankWhite #154802 noted CHT is improving.

A significant part of the discussion revolves around the contributions of specific players, particularly the forward pack. MrFrankWhite #154892 provided detailed running meter statistics, praising CNK's "godlike" performance and Clark's consistent impact, while noting Capewell and Marata's relatively weaker contributions. The contributions of Leka were a hot topic; Wrighty #155017 highlighting Capewell's post-match quote, "It will be scary if Ali Leiataua discovers how good he can be," suggesting Leka could have a very high ceiling. The impact Fish had on defense was mentioned, Makasene #154978 said the impact Fish had on defense was big.

Concerns were also raised regarding the team's attacking shape and the performance of certain players. However, the overall sentiment remains positive, with many expressing excitement about the team's potential and the resurgence of their home ground advantage, while still noting the inexperience in the halves pairing and the need for continued improvement in attack, as pointed out by several posters. Boats n Hoes #155113 noted the team's strong performance towards the end highlighted their growth, stating "Saw towards the end Ali got swamped by 4 defenders and went backwards in our own half, Leka took the next hit up and blew them apart 😂 This is how top teams do it". Recently, Wahs_Ultras #15707 shared a breakdown of the game, noting that the team was deadly within the opposition's 10m line. He didnt bust through them, he made a few pcm. He had 1 decent run and 1 decent tackle in 50mins of bludging. No tackle breaks, no line breaks.

Ali had a better run and a better hit.
He left one of the Roosters most influential forwards and one of their halves of the floor nearly in tears in the floor. In the same play.

If you don't think thats a good thing you're a bit of a wally.

Round 2 and 3 we have become the myth busters, giant killers, party poopers for two teams that were deemed as hot favourites based on their previous week’s performance.
Wests Tigers are also on a roll albeit v Eels and Dolphins.
Another team we will bring back down to earth hopefully.
Biggest story of the season so far is the Panthers - maybe, just maybe, they're on the downward arc... and neither is anything definite about our team yet: we're going to have our first real bench mark match in round 6 against the storm ... looking forward to that since webby has guaranteed that's when our halves will be firing for the first time... lol

Pretty nice story with CNK as the focus:

"Defeating the Roosters holds special significance and a certain symmetry for Nicoll-Klokstad. The result ended an eight-year drought for the Warriors against Sydney at Mt Smart - their 14-13 win in 2017 was his debut game for the club.

"That's funny," he reflected.

"My debut game we beat them and my 50th game - that's cool."

That's ok. Don't think of it as arguing. Think of it is an academic debate. Also worth noting the people arguing in favour of "don't change a winning formula" were holding their own nicely in the debate so there was no need for anyone else to get involved. But yes on the surface of it a bit of wind up. Worse debates have happened on this forum before. I am trying to think of one...oh I know after we lost SJ in 2018 there was a ludicrous debate about whether we were better off without him. I mean what did history end up showing us? After he left we finished bottom four most years. That was the biggest wind up ever. People wanted him gone because he was "inconsistent" by that they mean he was only the best player on the field for either team once every three games instead of every game. It was out of control. There was a lot of SJ hate that came to the surface. When he came back to us there was nothing but love which was good to see.
I went to forum prison for debating the form and value of Shaun Johnson after a run of poor form with @auswarriorsfan. It happens.

Funny thing was somebody else debated the same bloke and I warned that he was a protected species. Actually I think that was what got me in prison

While I thought that tmm would be our 7 and LM our 6 this year I now have respect for AWs decisions especially with the results of late.
Don't understand why the confusion 😕
just thought 2nd preseason game against storm, really liked tmm at fullback, gave so many options, why not, I mean how will you prepare against all 3 playmakers, unstoppable!

There's jamming in because its the defensive policy but then there's jamming in cause youve misread the cues, which Roger possibly did a couple of times there (not helped by non communication on his edge probably), and i still say in that first example they showed, it is possible for a faster centre to double off the decoy onto the sweeper, Manly identifying and exploiting Pompeys lack of gas.

I know there's a few rep Touch players on this site and all this stuff would be very familiar as your constantly put in these situations of defending multiple numbers and sweeping movements so your very reliant on your policy's which can change in an instant pending on ball position. And ive always said defending on the wing or at centre is so much harder than defending in the middle of the park for exactly that reason, u have multiple runners coming at u so u have to make defensive decions....in the middle its easy......smash whatever's in front of u.

Thanks man, i like these analysis type vids, didnt realize this one was out there, might follow it.
very simple, sliding man on man defense, the key is to have the man on defender target the ball carrier leaving the inside and outside defenders to cover their men, important for the inside defenders cover (i.e. slide across) and if they're too fast then get into their passing lanes to put pressure on them, then use the old feint tackle (pretend to tackle ball carrier and hit inside supporting runner or vice versa (dummy to the ball carrier going to tackle inside runner and then smash ball carrier - works on the greedy ball hoggers. - used to work back in the day?

I said it before the season started and got laughed at. We have the toughest pack in the NRL
Marata - Jake the Muss
Fish - One scary fucker
Barnett - Considered to be an enforcer and nearly lost his career at the Knights for elbowing some poor Kent in the face because Barnett just "felt like it".
On the top of that we have the hombre twins Vaimauga and Halasema who like it rough.

The only "nice guys" in our forward pack are Capewell and Ford.

And Clark instead of Jazz

Capewell is Origin player and I like the new humpty dumpty 30min prop Ford

Btw Egan is literally carrying the spine in red zone attacks, notice the return of the no look Daredevil passes that lead to tries down the chain.

He is scary as well, as in we are scared if he gets another head knock, heart attack stuff

Might work in yawnion, but thats a different kettle of fish? Limited effectiveness these days in league, modern attacks would eat that old school stuff for breakfast. That's why outside backs are all coached on jamming, it's just the top teams are better at it.

Sliding D exposes too many inside shoulders for lead runners and a good half will always play deep into the line with a back rower to square up the 3 and 4 defenders anyway.

Even after a win and a win streak of two there are some who want to argue over something.... anything.
I don't mind healthy debate as long as it is positive and looking ahead to the future (I wonder if AW has a little look at this forum from time to time as we should be seen to be supporting him; this might apply to some players as well so be careful what you post)
