For all the talk of roosters butchering tries, we actually bombed about 4 ourselves?

Pompey not passing early to Roger to cut back and crush the line, Boyd skipping Ali and gave it to Dallin when their centre rushed out causing him not to have room and cut back, 1 with Dallin waiting for a random rainbow pass and lost all the space, and Erin ignoring Ford who could have run back and through the hole twice πŸ˜‚

Bit late to the party, was out last night but managed to watch the first half ironically at a pub in the EQ (next to Allianz) and the only Aus fans going for the roosters were roosters fans.
Have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the result, was concerned we’d see more of the same from the later part of last season but was happy to be wrong.
Only round 1 so try not to get too far ahead, Roosters were poor but we looked pretty well drilled and with more ad lib attack than I’ve seen in the Webby era. I’d hoped we could limit the damage until the injured players come back and it looks like we are capable of at least that so more than happy.
Only real concern was Ali’s defence, teams will target that.

Post match Webster:

β€˜Boyd's performance naturally raised questions about the halves combination once injured playmaker Luke Metcalf returned, but Webster was happy to keep that discussion for another time.

β€œAm I allowed to say we will cross that bridge when we get to it?” Webster laughed.

β€œNah, I think we've got great depth in the halfback position.

β€œWhen that happens, we will work out what the best balance is for our team. I think you also don't have to pigeonhole halves so that they can only wear the 7 jersey. I think everyone is getting a little bit better at being a 6 and a 7, or you just look at them as two halves.’

What do we read into this? Metcalf could come back as a 6 if Boyd keeps smashing it?

I hope so!

Contrast between Roosters and Raiders was compelling. Both had crazy possession stats against them during pts of the match and had awful starts to their games. But unlike the chooks, the Raiders got over it and just went on with the job, dismantling Manly in a professional way. Conversely chooks acted like entitled brats who thought they were destined to win that game and started acting out the moment it became clear they weren't going to win.

Unfortunately many in the media are indulging the roosters in their whinging takes. Which is why I appreciate Kemp's take here. Reffing aside, the reality for them is that their forward pack let them down on Friday. Our forward dominance is why they were forced to cheat in the ruck, not the other way round.

When is the forbidden fruit supposed to return from injury?

Ali still showing the same/similar issues that saw him banished last year after the Raiders loss at home.

Those are park footy jersey grabs, absolutely no place for that in first grade.

Just about every other player has learnt to live and die on every play under Webby. But the cogs just dont appear to be turning for Ali in that respect.

Might be one that has to set sail over to Aus as a career wake up call. That could very well be one that comes back to bite us, but what do you do hes been under Webby for three years now.
No other NRL team is going to pick him up with that defence. I reckon he will be super league bound and be a star there. He isn't a rookie, he is 23, golden years for a centre.

Perhaps Egan needs to close the game out and Healey comes on for a period and causes havoc?
I am wondering if Webster is trying to get away from this double use of a bench replacement, and giving Healy the chance to learn how to close out games/moreover think that way...Healy's game is pretty obviously missing the game management experience, he is all impact no strategy atm (not a criticism he is a child in NRL terms).

Healey is certainly a great prospect but in reality at Newtown he was coming off the bench behind Jayden Berrell and it was a bit of an impact role he had there. I do like the look of him and hopefully he’s sponging up Egan’s knowledge, but the threat of home will always linger and if I’m honest I really like the look of Makaia Tafua

Having rewatched the game (of course), couldn't help but notice that Laban didn't get a lot of ball. Only 41 run meters for 46 minutes, whereas TSS did 120+ m for half that time on the field. Totally understandable-DCE was such a liability on defense so you have to keep going to that side. But Laban is a potential weapon we can exploit against opposition halves like a Kikau or an Eli Katoa if developed properly. That's another string to our attacking bow that we can develop above and beyond what we saw yesterday.
We tend to set up the usual vets on every other play (comparing Laban to someone like Capewell for example) and so when new players like Laban, or Leka, or Dimitric come along they are used as decoys (even that is being too kind sometimes they just get ignored).

Makes sense when the team is one that is constantly changing spine players with the hard luck stories the Warriors have had, the halves are gonna run the plays used at training more readily involving the usual suspects, rather than taking the risk to look for the younger fresher legs. (Not telling you what you already don't know/are saying).

On a brighter note at least the plan seemed to be for Leka this year that we intentionally give him clean ball, but it was obviously when he was marked and flat footed - but lets consider that while not what we want to see (Leka being given space) at least it is a start in a direction we all know we want this team to go with Leka (I'm giving it time).

I guess a good other side of coin way of looking at us under utilizing these young bucks is that could catch the opposition out when we do hit the young forwards with good ball.

he needs to work on his distribution skills, as others here have noted. But his running game is second to none and has an uncanny ability to spot holes in the defensive line and go for the jugular. That's why I actually think Webby's strategy to utilize Healey for the final quarter of the game makes a lot of sense. Bit unlucky with the HIA cutting his minutes short and quietening his impact. But moving forward, he could add an extra dimension to our attack, especially if we've started to add offloads to our gameplan.

Ten Observations from the game:

1) James Fisher Harris is money in the bank for protecting a lead in the last ten minutes. He is an elite prop and better for this team than AFB was.
2) We find out where we are at next week when we take on last year's minor premiers. This is going to be a battle up front. Tapine single handedly intimidated us last year but this time we have Fish and Barnett back. Will be one for the ages. But beating the Roosters is a great scalp.
3) Laban had / has really bad ball security. I don't care that someone is putting hands in there and pushing the ball out illegally. Hold the ball anyway. I started watching ball security during the match and both TSS and CNK are like the bank of England at ball security. No one can pry it free from their clasp no matter what antics they try. Would really like to see Laban work on this.
4) Boyd played at new levels he has never gone to before. He is starting to believe (Matrix reference).
5) No comment on Ali's defence as it has already been quite rightly said. He either wants to be a part of the NRL or he doesn't. Commit to the tackle young man.
6) CHT was great. Loved the partial return of Jungle ball. It is in our DNA let's play this way.
7) The winning of the game was the crowd. Great support if you were there. I am going to the Warriors game in Wellington. We can only hope to come close to what Mt Smart put out on Friday. It really helps with referee decisions. Keep it up.
8) This game was won up front. Jackson Ford. We always said about him that the knock was his pathetic ill discipline. And people said just let him get older. Well now he is 28 years old. Has he arrived? He very much is the type of forward you find making an impact for a top four team. You don't find a forward like him playing for a bottom 4 team or they would not be in the bottom 4. He looked legit.
9) CNK looked a million dollars. Can he keep this up all season or will he fatigue by round 10. Let's hope he is back.
10) All our attacking succcess barring the CNK try is coming down our lethal left edge. Take a bow CHT/ Capewell/ Pompey/ Roger - these guys are the engine room of the team. I bequeath that name to this edge. The left edge is the engine room of the team especially offensively.

Great win - our PD already off to a flying start.
