Tohu Harris has reportedly announced his retirement, effective immediately.
Having
shut down suggestions he might follow Shaun Johnson into retirement last September, Harris’ decision, reported by the
The Daily Telegraph, is a hefty blow to the Auckland-based NRL club.
Harris was only able to manage 14 games during a disappointing season for the club and, back in July,
underwent surgery for a chronic wrist injury.
The
Daily Telegraph reported Harris told people close to him he could not play on as he struggled to recover from the injury.
Even before his early finish, the injury saw him miss five games and it was impacting him both on and off the field.
“I'd had the injury for over a year, and it was affecting everyday life and and I wasn't able to train pretty much all week, and getting injections for games, and it broke me down,” Harris told
Stuff’s League of Our Own podcast.
Following his standout season in 2023, Harris
committed to play on in 2025.
But in a revealing chat with
League of Our Own, which made it clear Harris wasn’t planning to play on long, Harris said what happens following the 2025 season was up in the air.
“It’s probably a year-by-year thing but a lot of that’s not my decision, it’s up to other people whether they want me there.
“Obviously dealing with the amount of injuries I’ve had, I’ve got to make sure my body is right.
“With a growing son I want to be there for him and be able to do things with him and that’s important to,” Harris said. “I don’t want to be limping around after I’ve finished (playing) and not be able to give him everything that I can.”
