Maybe he talked with Volkman and he said he wants to play 7 for the NSW cup team
No 'maybe' about it - 100% Webster asked Volkman if he is ready for finals in the NRL. And is it so shocking to people to entertain the idea that Volkman may have said I do not feel ready coach?

I don't think it is 09 Parramatta but they have been better than just "finding a way" in the back half of the competition. Over the last 12 games they have average 30 in attack and 14 in defence.

The last 3 regular season games were beating the Rabbits 29-10, The Sharks 32-6 and the Dragons 32-12. I expect us to win with our forwards proving too strong, but it is a stretch to call their run a red herring,

You have to laugh mate. Newcastle have the 4th best points for in the NRL and were only 3 points worse than us in defence. They need a better kicker, with more goals kicked they would have been the number one points for in the game 2023.

Their outside backs meters and tackle busts are insane, I saw on the Warriorholic breakdown that in the last five games they have scored on Average twenty points more than us per game.

The Knights fact checker:

Best Try scoring side in the NRL.
2ND best tackle breaking side
Best Line breaks in the NRL

Less Missed tackles than the Warriors.

I suspect many fans in here had no idea that the Knights have the best attack in the NRL including the Panthers and Broncos.

I know for a fact most will measure the Knights based off their early season showings against the Warriors and their past history as a not so bad ass team.

Fans just tend not to watch other teams and when they do they have a deep inbuilt bias that says Knights average Warriors good.

To win this we are going to have to turn on the best defensive sets of our lives because the Knights are harder to defend than Brisbane will be next week.

Same goes for attack, their defence is a mirror of ours, when ours is good.

I kept saying we want Canberra, but now we have what we do, at least if we knock over the Knights we will be ready for anyone.

The last few years there have been some final round matches that have been replayed the following week in week 1 of the finals.

Like the Broncos vs Storm this year.

The Warriors and Knights kicked off their season against each other in round 1. Now they will end the other sides season.

Webby was on SENZ this morning and said (paraphrasing) - “Tohu and Dylan are both good to go. Dylan hurt his big toe but we thought it was an ankle so we got him off early knowing we had a game in hand this week. Re: SJ, he is tracking well at this stage but we genuinely won’t know until Thurs/Friday”.

Pretty weird to not even have Volkman in the team list squad when you don't know if your main playmaker will be fit, and when your makeshift playmaker was also recovering from some toe injury.

It's a really strange statement he's making by opting to go without Volkman.

The factors around this a fairly obvious IMO

The NSW Cup game is 2 hours before the NRL Warriors game

The NSW Cup game is being played in Sydney so the boys will be flying there on Friday morning.

They would have to make a call on Johnson at the latest mid day to Thursday to then apply for dispensation for Volkman to then be included and not get on that flight to Aussie friday morning.

But they probably want to give Johnson right up until the last minute. Not Thursday arvo IMO

Volkman also deserves the opportunity to make the decision of whether he is available for for first grade or whether he wants to turn out for his boys in the NSW Cup. For all we know he probably said he wants to finish out the season in the NSW Cup which i reckon is fair, they have a shot at the premiership title.

NSW Cup is completely irrelevant when it comes to being compared with winning an NRL finals game full stop. Incredibly more so in these circumstances considering how long it has been and how well our season has gone. I bet very few on this forum (including myself) can name last years NSW cup winner. No way is this due to NSW cup being prioritised.

Webby had a chance to mix up the line up last week considering we were getting smoked no matter what. Instead we ran with what we did and got smoked and now he doesn't want to make any changes.

Webby has a game plan and he's sticking with it. I don't like it but it is what it is. If SJ drops out and Lussick comes in I might spew.

I'm probably reading too much into it, but I think Volkman is out of favour and likely will move on at the end of season as rumoured. In my mind he should be playing 7 if SJ isn't, TMM is not a dominate half or even a kicking half. Walker can hold the fort but we lose his attacking game in the middle while stifling the attack out wide.

The only thing that stacks up for me is he is out of favour and leaving..

Maybe Volkman has signed somewhere else and they are keeping it quiet until the off season (I have no info on this). I know he is signed until 2025 but that doesn't mean much in the NRL. It just seems strange that we cannot confirm SJ until Friday when Volkman wasn't named at all. The guy has been killing it in cup and trains with the FG team. Very strange.

If that was the scenario I feel like it would still make sense to play Volkman (unless his attitude towards the club had also become shit lately). With Walker coming into the halves as the other option it's not like we'd be playing him ahead of someone who isn't leaving and also plays half.

Man I understand not doing further damage to SJ but not training with the team? Seems odd to say don't run Friday but on Saturday you can play 80 lol.
Yeah I’m trying to make sense of it too but am struggling with it a bit.

Like a lot of soft tissue injuries maybe it just needs a slight bit of load to help its recovery and they’ve decided that enough is enough and no further risk is needed.

Either way it does sound very touch and go which isn’t great prep for anyone, him or the team

I think SJ at very limited fitness isn't much better. How can you engage the line if you can't take advantage of space if it's given to you. Will be so interesting to see how much he can run

Sometimes the excitement of a big event can make your body basically forget it's injured.

Couple of years back I managed to get a horrible graze on my ankle about 2 days before the Auckland half marathon - hurt to buggery and could barely put weight on it. Come race day and managed to smash out 21km at record pace.

Obviously not quite the same as playing an NRL finals game but I can sort of see the logic. There'll be tests in place to establish whether the body is up to it.
