NRL St. George Illawarra Dragons

You have to love the lack of attention to detail with some of these clubs. Like the Tigers ANZAC jersey using a stock photo of American soldiers.

It is not like these clubs are multi million dollar businesses.

I work in a small company of less than 30 people. Any new branded clothing or when we move office the logo is discussed and finalised. I know they likely wouldn't get their logos wrong. It is still a lack of attention to detail when honouring one of your employees. Maybe more how companies treat employees would have been a better analogy. I've been at a few that celebrate anniversaries.

BREAKING: Flanagan set to be sacked as Dragons swing axe after horror NRL run

Shane Flanagan is reportedly set to be axed as Dragons coach.

Chairman Andrew Lancaster and CEO Tim Watsford will face the media on Monday morning where it expected they will confirm the news.

It is understood the Dragons held a meeting with Flanagan on Sunday after the club slumped to a seventh-straight loss to start the season.

It is not yet known whether Flanagan will coach the team for their Anzac Day clash with the Roosters.

Assistant coaches Dean Young and Michael Ennis are the leading candidates to take over for Flanagan on an interim basis.

Saturday’s 30-12 loss to Souths followed a 28-18 defeat to Manly and a 32-0 shutout against North Queensland which saw Flanagan, who took over from Anthony Griffin after he was sacked by the Dragons midway through the 2023 season, booed by the Red V faithful.

Having already lost his final four games in charge to close out 2025, Flanagan could finish on a 11-game losing streak as Dragons coach should the club swing the axe.

Flanagan struck a forlorn figure in the post-match press conference following the Souths loss.

“Of course it puts pressure on. It puts me and the club under pressure,” he said.

“We’re not winning footy games and I understand that. It’s a business of winning and we’re not winning.

“I get to work every day and all I can do is do my best to prepare the players the best I can, and if it doesn’t work and they decide to make another decision, well I’ve just got to live with it.”

Flanagan appeared to have some understanding of his fate having admitted to Australian Associated Press before the Cowboys loss that he needed to win games to keep his job.

“I fully understand it. If you’re going to coach at a big club we expect to win,” Flanagan told AAPahead of the loss to the Cowboys.

“That’s the cut-throat nature we’re in sport. You see it all over the world if you don’t win.

“The club and CEO, chairman and board have been rock solid. But I am not silly enough to understand that if you don’t win, they’ve got to change something.

“We can’t change our 30-man roster, I can’t sack 30 players. So guess what, it’s (on me).”

This is almost unfair.

Teams shouldn't be able to sack coaches mid season.

7 teams have basically been given an extra bye and now I have to actually put thought into 8 games in my tipping instead of just 7 each week.

Could not have said it better. He should never have been allowed to coach again after the peptides at the Sharks.
He was also suspended after the initial peptide suspension as he didn't adhere to the rules of the original suspension. It is hard to recall a coach being suspended let alone twice. The main issue with the first one is his duty of car for his players.

As we know from our past or from other clubs who have gotten into a hole. It is all well and good to change the coach. It doesn't equal success. You can get into a cycle of failure and find yourself back in the same spot with a new coach.

Turning the club would have been Flanagan's brief coming in. He went hard in terms of recruitment. They were linked to a lot of players. Didn't land the big targets. Will a new coach have more luck? time will tell.

I'm just thankful at the moment that our club looks to be stable, and the key people in management seem aligned. Let's hope that continues with succession planning when they do eventually move on (hopefully after at least the inaugural premiership, or premiership #3 or higher).
