General Season 2024 summary and thoughts

Hah, it is indeed extremely mathematical, just need an very specific set of results the next few weeks :

- Warriors beat Dogs and Sharks (which will be the biggest hurdle)

- Dolphins/Dragons to lose last 3

- Broncos/Knights/Raiders to only win their one game against Dolphins/Dragons and lose other two

- Titans to only win their two games against Dragons/Knights and lose other two

And voilà we are in the 8 with 27 points (of course all moot if Dragons beat Titans today 😅)
c'mon tits and eels!

For me it’s very disappointing season, yes I know we’ve had injuries but there were some alarm bells as early as late last year.
Wasn’t sure we’d get top 4 again but thought we’d be solidly in the 8, had a bad feeling history would yet again repeat but still kept out hope that this time would be different.
Can accept losses if we are simply beaten by a better team however that’s not what unfolded most of the season.
Those first 2 games against the Sharks and Storm I think really broke us mentally and we never seemed to recover.
Biggest concerns was plenty of players progressed under Webby last year completely reverted this year, the resilience and staunchness on defence was gone, we stuck with the same game plan when we were well and truely figured out, our age went from experience to hinderence, our lack of speed was exploited.
Will be keen to see if Webby learnt anything from this year and can turn it around- it seems like we have squandered yet another chance to reap the benefits of the teams current popularity

Disappointing and confusing season. As others have said there's a lot that has gone wrong, but I think at the heart of it there are two things which we can be pleased with, the first could even be casual to a lot of the bad: i.e. playing to a tight pattern, we're at least disciplined in that, and it shows that the squad have bought into what Webster is putting out there, even to the point of madness when it clearly is not coming off - based off a dominant pack our metres are enormous, we then play a little wider and put it in the corners - it's a good pattern and works on a statistical level... what's missing is the cohesion in the halves on attack and penetration on the edges... these can be fixed, the base is there. The other thing is the timing of introducing the young ones ... i disagree with some assessments and think it's actually being handled pretty well, which will set us up for sustained success in the coming 3-5 years. A couple of them are ready next season, and we will see them as regular starters... looking forward to that... though I worry about 7, there's no obvious answer for us at the moment - goddamnit Shaun, why do you have to go?

Question, as Justin Morgan was an assistant coach (but covered defense), who was our defence coach this year?

Do we need to invest there or is it more a case of attitude ie lack of line speed etc?

Just felt this year we has no steel on defence and at times had gaping holes through middle aka eels game

With the power of hindsight, it's crazy that the first 45 minutes of the season really summed us up. Got off to a hiss and a roar, then absolutely faded.

How many times did we see that this season? We were lacking that steel and fortitude that we had last year, and seemed to lose every game that only 12 months earlier we would've pulled out of the bag.

Yes we were disrupted with injuries, but all season it felt like we were lacking a plan B.

The way the games are reffed we almost don’t want to get off to a dominant start. The team with the ascendancy tend to get more penalties, teams seem to play to hold this out/ minimise the damage knowing the penalty count will get squared up and come home with a wet sail so to speak.

An absolute dogs breakfast! A fail of epic proportion!!

The players amd staff spending too much time wanking each other off on the media front! Who fucken cares what these guys are up to when they are consistently losing!

There has to be serious questions asked! Because all that good work of 23 has been erased!

Again! What sort of club do the warriors want to be?

They have lived up to what everyone in this comp thinks of us, A flash in the pan club.

We need more Australians who just know how to win!

Thats a bit unfair. We should be proud that the playing group and coaches speak well for everyone else and have admiration for the club, despite this being a losing year. It coukd be worse. And you dont need to hear what they are doing if you dont want to see any positivity. Just dont click the videos if it gives you PTSD.

This year has been a writeoff for a variety of reasons. I just hope we learn from it and come back better prepared for next season.

Slade Griffin replaced Morgan but Webby did away with the Attack based assistant coach/Defense based assistant coach and went with Backs focused/Forwards focused assistants.

As for Stacey, Webby compared him to a NFL Special Teams coordinator, and that he specialises with the Halves/Spine and 5th tackle options.. If that is the case, I have no fucking idea what Stacey has done all year

Dare I say Trent Barrett could be a worthy addition to the staff somewhere? By most accounts he is a good assistant, just can't be a head coach to save his life

Would be a real slap in the face to Brownie for us to win a prem with Barrett on the staff too 👀 😂

I'm more ofbthe view that it's distracting to them. Not a good look when you are not playing well. It's all perception!

Milestones great!

Players acting like they are in a movie, saying show me the money, not so great. What have you achieved in this jersey Ali?

We are dangerously close back to where we were and Ata Hingano and the likes start to believe in thier own hype.

Media content can be great but there is a time.

If players do that whilst wearing the jersey or on club duties than fair enough criticism.

But we all do stupid shit outside of work, and that outside snippet shouldnt mean that is how we treat our work.

We get a lot of content from players than we did 10-15 years ago. Noone had social media accounts or allow fans access to their lives. Fans didnt go on youtube/podcasts to have a chat. Either we accept that comes part and parcel of the content we receive, or players remove themselves from giving that insight.

Are you saying less fishing content, more training and studying the opposition each week?

I thought we were onto something massive this year after the drubbing we gave to the Rabbits in round 5, SJ was in 2023 form, Egan was lauded to NSW Origin contention, CNK and TMM were carving.

Heard Fonzie in the TWL podcast say a couple of weeks back - in hindsight, if we had known SJ & Tohu were going to play injured most of the season, I would think we would struggle. They were massive contributors to the success of 2023.

One of the proudest victories is the win against the Panthers, genuine tears in my eyes following that game. Was super proud at the performance after the Dogs game at Homebush.

Some low points with the losses against the Titans & Dragons sticking out, but no way near the low feelings following other disastrous years.

Look at how well our reggies are doing & the pathways system is now in year one officially.

Exciting times to be a fan with some stability afoot after 30 years of inconsistency.
