Wonder how long before Gus asks Ciraldo to 'come for a stroll....keep looking at the flowers"
Ciraldo wasn't really a whinger until the last few weeks so I'm curious why the sudden change in tone. Last year he was all about putting the responsibility on the team rather than blaming the ref. Wonder if he's been told something by Gus already and this blame shifting is just a defence mechanism.

They’re 4-8, they’re not gonna make it
Regressing back to 2023
Webby unfortunately is a direct comparison of the Ivan apprentices, and we’re been acknowledged as in S-tier with Penrith
He might as well look at going to Manly, Dragons or Eels instead of struggling under Gus. Maybe the money is good lol.

The 1st game in a while I have not been able to watch live due to being in the air.....
I watched 5 mins of highlights on nrl.com and will wait until they post the full replay but damn, going down by 2 to the best team of this generation must be a confidence boost.
The fact that this was advertised by the NRL as the game of the round when Melbourne were playing Sydney is testament to how far this team has come.
I, being a long term Warriors tragic, just wanted us to not embarrass ourselves in the spotlight that was put upon us.
Not only did we not embarrass ourselves, we put on a performance that should send a message....
We are here and we are good and we deserve to be feared.

Anyway, enough of my high horse about shithousery, key moments analysis incoming...

Late Laban play - diabolical from Pompey here, unforgivable really, 3 shifts back towards you and you still can't get yourself in the play. Tut tut

- Ball has just been given inside to Fish - full lineup to the left

View attachment 17728

Fish to Clark - Pompey already given up on the play

View attachment 17729

Clark to CHT, Cht to Laban - Pompey "shit I should be there"

View attachment 17730

Laban looking for support, no one there. Just not good enough

Great analysis.

Would need to see this at full speed but would the Panthers players retreating with Pompey mean he didn’t think the ball should come to him (high risk) and then just fell behind the action?

Not excusing, just trying to understand.IMG_2096.webp

7. Pompey not to AKP the play before TT?

I think dogs beat them by going side to side as well. Penrith the best defensive team so that final timing on their scramble is needed to beat them

However frustrating, it's still incredibly promising knowing that if one of those hits we win.

We have a lot of young guys out there, much like the riff did at the start of their dynasty.

Future wise, we're heading in the right direction.

In the short term, we still have half a season to get this stuff right.

We should (touch wood) be much more polished come September.

Kempy went through this quite well on bloke I thought. At present, we are the 2nd best team in the comp. We aren't far off Penrith but there is still a gap. That Laban run is what distinguishes us and the riff right now. If it was Penrith making that great play, their entire back 3 would have been backing up and setting up in formation around the passing lane. That's the difference between a premier and a grand finalist. Pompey/AKP aren't going to be looking good on the debrief during the video session that's for sure.

Having said that, I'm not too disheartened. The reality check was good for us as we now know the standard that is required for beating the riff. But I think we did put them on notice that we are coming for them. They also won't forget the extra spice from JFH. Add to that the history of cross-over between the two clubs and this could emerge as the rivalry that shapes the next couple of seasons. Can't wait for rd23.

Until then however, we need to rest up and prepare to go again even stronger after the bye. 9-3 is a great position to be in at the half-way mark. With our far superior p/d advantage, we are effectively 4 pts ahead of 3rd and 6 pts ahead of 4th. Our goal for the rest of the year has to now be to wrap up that 2nd spot. I want that rd23 clash to also be 1 v 2.

It's pretty dire at normal speed.

Not onto it, doesn't react, jogging.

By the time he realises and starts sprinting, it's too late.

Just too casual. It's last play, he needs to be pushing up

Both Pomp and AKP just flat out were lazy and fucked up here.

Should've been up and ready for kick chase which should've instantly turned to into pushing up flat in support once TMM chose to pass.

Dont think we should take this as indicative of their effort levels overall or a sign of an ingrained issue in the team cause there we're plenty of times these guys were putting in the big effort plays and generally were going toe to toe for the most part.

It does however highlight the margins when your playing champion teams of how switched on you have to be to take the few oppertunities these teams give. Not an excuse for them but both Pompey and AKP had taken hit ups at the start of the set and did look gassed, and im pretty sure they werent expecting TM to run it on the last.....however the urgency they showed in that instance to react to that was poor and will stand out like dogs ball in their vid analysis. If the youngster Laban can push up and put himself in the play then so could they,

But yeah just failing to ice the few oppertunities when they presented themselves - Ali needlessly offside - CHT in the first half holding for a split 2nd too long when we had numbers.....probably the difference (altho i still say how Sutton spotted a Ford finger tip on that ball is beyond me, and if he had sent that upstairs as a try the bunker wouldve awarded it cause of no clear evidence.....then we'd be having a very different conversation).

As Webby said we are so close to being a contender but we're still learning what it means to be a heavyweight,

Hadn't thought about that (because at four rounds away from the finals you are still in the build up of your form stage of the year).
Could happen yeah.

Although that both coaches will want a rehearsal in case that final show down does come to pass.

And the other thing is, even if they are secure and winning, if they are not happy with the nature of those wins, they will be in search of more spine practise.

Also for Ivan, do you want to risk giving the Warriors a confidence boosting win? (albeit false confidence with a Penrith B loss).

Just spit balling coz it is gonna be a long two weeks.

I like your thinking.

I was wondering whether the two slighted outside backs had been involved in the earlier play, cheers.

I don't think it is even a thing that more physical fitness will be the answer to either (hey you can always have more) but these Warriors players are fit physically, but I think we are talking about mental conditioning primarily, the kind that takes seasons of winning hard games to forge.

That was a hard game though, the momentum swings were killer (mentally).

To me, the biggest problem was that we looked defeated before kick off. We looked panicked, that CHT comment you made was a thing that was pissing me off a little about him and Te Maire (not singling them out, the whole team) they looked like they were uptight, overwrought.

We became clunky, were getting swamped, when really, if we set ourselves deeper on those plays, and as you say let the ball go, we would have looked like our best efforts this year.

But promising signs, we looked better as the boys confidence grew. And I hope like fook they remember that come the return match.

We need hard games like this particularly on the run home for that mental honing.

A quick check of the Ladder looks really good, we have Penrith, Broncos, Souths, Knights, Manly.

Not a Titan nor Dragons cake walk in sight.

If top 2 is secured, I would expect mass restings.

Don't think either team will run out full strength unfortunately.

We might have to wait until the GF for a full strength outing against eachother
Still a lot of games to go and the majority of them will be against desperate teams in the back half of this season to secure a top 2 spot. We are in rhe box seat though.

The little details that the Panthers get right more often than not. Unfortunately they highlight some players more than others. I like Ali and think he has a big future - if he can get that mentally switched on part of his game right. Offside for the kick for his no try, bad read on defence for their opening try and a couple of other defensive ones. Up against Casey you are going to get found out if you arent fully focused and in the finals it doesn't get easier.

Not trying to single out Ali here, just highlighting where we are at.

Also seemed that a number of times we had players slow to get up from making tackles and involved again where the Panthers didn't appear to have that as much. Need to watch the game again to see if thats a fair comment or not.

The other thing we can say with certainty after this game is that the team will have had that 2 point gap burnt into them, knowing that they could've should've would've gone on with it - we're almost there, we just lack that last bit which is totally within reach - don't think that would sit the same way if we'd actually won

Rd 23 is a good month before the conclusion of the regular season. There's a good chance the minor premiership isn't locked up for the riff either. I don't see a world where that is not a full strength matchup on both sides.
