NRL NRL on Sky

From a paywalled herald article

Sky is expanding the number of sports events it broadcasts and streams in 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) after debuting the... technology, which offers up to four times the quality of standard definition pictures, with the Ashes and the Australian Open.
“We’ll have one Super Rugby Pacific match in 4K UHD most weekends, starting with the Blues v Chiefs match on February 14; the Auckland Wellington A-League derby (February 21); plus most Warriors matches, starting with their season opener against the Roosters on March 6,” a spokeswoman said.
“We plan to add selected 4K UHD coverage of further sports in the coming months, including Formula 1, NRL, the A-League, Supercars and the English Premier League.”

The current HD with my modern TVs I sometimes find hit hard to tell if it is raining during a game.

Have to look quite hard to see if it is raining. At least with the old standard definition you could tell, you often couldn't see the game as well but you could tell.

4K UHD you might be able to see every drop.

Sky lost the UFC. The UFC aren't afraid to move broadcasters.

The NRL talk a good game and then go back to the usual broadcasters. It will be interesting to see how seriously the NRL look at other options.

I've been watching a bit of the NFL and it shows there could be a huge improvement in how we cover sports in this part of the world. Sure, there are more stoppages in the NFL so more chance to show stats, interviews etc. But there would be ways to improve the graphics or stats during union or league games. A change in broadcaster could be a kick in A the coverage needs.

Sky no longer have the MTV channels. I saw on YT that MTV had ended. That wasn't correct. It was the MTV 80s and other channels that had ended (in the U.S). Channels ending and Warner Bros (HBO Max ) getting sold will impact Sky. Less channels to pick up from overseas, harder to get content.

Sky Sport going up again. $5 increase.

It also looks like they will lose their HBO Max integration in June as HBO Max is going to launch in NZ. That is quite a bit of content Sky may potentially lose. I doubt the subscription prices will come down.

Also looking at next Sunday's schedule I don't see the Super League game listed.

A shame it would be a big day with all 3 games.

Bugger, I've had Neon on since December (half price first month), 90% of my watchlist is HBO related so might have to pickup the rate of binging before then hah!
Also might get on the SkySportNow + Neon package for $65 for next few months (not sure if pre- or post- price increase you mentioned) which is basically half price Neon plus normal Sky Sport given I'm actively using Neon at the moment.

I'm not sure if this is the article I originally read. The key part is below. Looks like the rollout may be timed when for when Sky's contract runs out.

Not sure where I read or heard June. May get it mixed up with my next point. The main things I was are DC or the GOT series. House of the Dragon season 3 is releasing in June.

HBO Max currently lives in a branded environment on Neon and with Sky entertainment subscriptions. From mid-2026 the content will instead live exclusively on the direct-to-consumer platform.

With the NRL, EPL, F1 and UFC PPV there is still just enough to keep me tethered to Sky.

I can't be arsed dealing with the illegal streams and how they cut in out out, the pop ad's etc.

But the value for money is so dire with Sky. There probably will come a tipping point.

I'm the opposite, really only have Sky for nrl, and if the Warriors are playing shit I lose interest in the other games, so I feel like I'm being extorted when the only alternative is Rarotonga Sky.

Shaun Johnson will join Sky Sport’s NRL coverage full-time this season, headlining the broadcaster’s rugby league team and returning for a second season of Ford League Lounge with Shaun Johnson.
Johnson will be part of Sky’s wraparound coverage for home New Zealand Warriors matches, alongside presenter Laura McGoldrick, who will lead coverage. Programming will include pre-match shows, half-time analysis and post-match wrap-ups with interviews and expert commentary. Tia McDougall will support the presenting team.
Beaven Dewar has been appointed main caller for Warriors home games, joined by Willie Poching, Monty Betham, Ritchie Barnett and Honey Hireme-Smiler.

I liked Beaven Dewar commentaries, Willie also gets my vote. I wish Monty (nice guy) would stop the Warriors' cheerleading and become more centerted in his comments.

"Stabbing grubber kick" MF says that 5 times a game, he's got a better voice than Glen Llama though. Willie's got a good "been hit in the throat 50 times" raspy league voice from the sideline.

Good for Shaun, but he is still so close to the team, played with basically every player we got except KHAN, is he going to tell the fans anything real? Is he going to be breaking down the opposition beyond watch out for <insert star player here>

What kind of coverage do people even want in 2026? is it even worth sky investing in it? Or should they just licence the fox pre game coverage.

I like seeing a bit of the players personalities in post-match interviews, but i never watch the pre-game, only want to know if the team list has changed.
