NRL NRL 2026 General Recruitment Thread

Jake Averillo heavily linked to the Dragons. Dolphins keen on extending him but it's likely he will end up leaving to chase a guaranteed starting spot which the dragons are offering.

If Dragons do sign him, its expected he will push for an immediate release for this season.

There's a starting spot here at the Warriors.

Speed, skill and footwork in our backline will add a whole new dimension.
I think this year he hits another level.

An agreement between Parramatta and Melbourne to take Zac Lomax this year fell over after Ryan Matterson wouldn’t agree to an immediate transfer to the Storm.

The parties still came to an out-of-court settlement on Tuesday, with Melbourne effectively paying $250,000 worth of Parramatta’s legal fees in exchange for Lomax being able to return to the NRL in 2028 – 12 months earlier than the original release agreement that Lomax struck with the Eels.

Sources speaking on condition of anonymity due to commercial sensitivities have told this masthead that the Storm had agreed to also sign Matterson, in a bid to end the impasse.

Informed sources said the Storm’s latest offer was to pay the remainder of Matterson’s 2026 contract – worth approximately $416,000 on the salary cap – as well as a further $300,000 in cash to the blue and golds.

The parties agreed, only for Matterson – whose future is clouded after suffering concussion symptoms – to decide he didn’t want to transfer to Melbourne.

Parramatta had earlier commenced legal proceedings to prevent Lomax from joining the Storm, given his release from a four-year contract was contingent on the Eels providing written consent. The Blues winger was granted a release to join rebel rugby competition R360, but has been left in limbo after its inaugural season was put back until 2028.

The cessation of the case is unlikely to take the sting out of the opening-round clash between Parramatta and Melbourne on Thursday.

The Eels were adamant they would not accept any deal that adversely affected their football department. They had previously knocked back offers of $100,000, $200,000, and a final one of $300,000, which included a $211,000 salary cap component to subsidise Matterson’s wage. The out-of-favour forward has inadvertently become collateral damage at a time when his own future is clouded after again suffering concussion-type symptoms.

Looks like the Eels had a strong case. All they really conceded was he can return a year earlier than his original release.

Fair enough on Ryan Matterson we our sports aren't like the American sports in terms of player trading. If the money increased to millions instead of $100,000's than maybe the players may be more inclined to be told to move. Matterson has to agree with the move, and we don't know his situation. A bit of a reminder for us with Barnett, and expecting to trade players like trading cards. It will require a player wanting to move.

Unless he goes back to looking at union, I doubt this is the last we hear about Lomax. I doubt he will sit out two years. Can see now that the situation has been tested in court, his management will move on from Melbourne and start calling around other clubs. It will be an interesting sales pitch. You can sign an Origin and an International level player; however, you are going to have to move someone on to get him.

Again, you could argue another advantage for the Sydney clubs. The potential player going to the Eels doesn't need to move State or country if they are already based in Sydney.

Glad the Lomax saga is done.

Let's see if he sees out this contract. I can't recall when R360 is now due to start. A two year contract that coincides with when he is allowed back in the NRL.

I do find articles like this amusing sometimes. Same if it was the other way with league signing someone from union. Sports can be petty sometimes. The little one upmanship kind of reminds me of pro-wrestling where you don't win a coin toss by luck you defeat someone in a coin toss.

A major boost for the Rugby Australia. He got a release orginally to play union. He looked around and couldn't sort out a deal. Now he's back signing to play union.

Yes, you can argue it's a blow to the NRL. But you can also argue there were rules in place with a contract and for once they are being adhered to.

Yes, he could play for the Wallabies at the World Cup as he is eligible. He hasn't played a game yet. He could star in union or he could struggle. Even for Rugby Australia it could just be two years. If he struggles in union, back to the NRL. Or if he goes well he could chase the money overseas or R360 if it gets off the ground.

Agreed. NRL is to blame here if they want to lament on why he has gone to Union. Parra were just doing the right thing. NRL was dumb to start carrying our stupid threats of the 10 year ban just as a scare tactic and then try to get him registered with Storm when R360 fell away. Hes a good talent, hope he does well.

Full credit to the eels for saying fuck you in particular to the Melbourne storm, they've still let him go for nothing, but not to the team who won a GF against them when rorting.

admirable amounts of pettiness.
$750k transfer fee isn't chicken feed though. Now they get nothing but salary cap space.
