Why would Metcalf have a new deal sorted before asking for a release? This isnt a logical move or a calculated attempt to get more money. Luke's got his feelings hurt and so he's lashing out. He's a jilted lover who is burning his bridges. Human behaviour is pretty predicable.

People talk about empathy but lots still clearly lack it and/or confuse it for sympathy.

Because a good agent would protect his clients career & financial interests. What you are proposing would be plausible if he was self managed by I highly doubt it.

Correct, but they aren't in charge. People very often make choices that aren't in their best interests when emotional, regardless of counsel. Look at most divorces.

Once Luke says "I'm done", his agent is obligated to act on that, while protecting his interests.

I don't believe that the Bears would not be interested in Metcalf for one million dollars.

They have a massive problem with not being able to sign any marquee players. They have a ton of Salary cap space (speculative but likely).

I just assume Metcalf's people have already said no bro he does not want to live in Perth.

If it ain't that, then I don't understand how Perth think they have a case to ask the NRL for this cap exemption and or special third party status (surely declining Metcalf goes against that partition).

It is weird that the Dogs got involved late, rather than lining up a Metcalf visit when he first flew to Australia - but who knows.
Perth aren’t interested due to the perceived attitude and baggage Metcalf comes with. Not wanting to spend $1m on someone who’s never played more than 15 games in a season and has thrown toys out of the pram 2 games after returning from an ACL injury isn’t exactly poor business. Why should Perth have to sign anyone who becomes available to justify the need for more assistance?

I’m shocked his agent has agitated and hasn’t had anything lined up, also really weird the dogs met with him multiple times to then pull out, they’d have absolutely known how much he wanted. My guess as to why the dogs pulled the pin is likely the same nature as to why Perth don’t want him and why the warriors were very comfortable with him leaving. His ego outweighs achievements and it’s showing

The basis for the Bears request for NRL special status is that they cannot attract players.

A marquee player comes on the market, and they ignore them. There goes the argument about having hiring problems.

This is not any player, this is the most public player situation in the NRL right now, front page news.

I could accept that the Bears don't want him for the reason you speculate on. That is a possibility. But to even not be linked in the conversation is strange.

As a Warriors fan, I think I have a sense of what it is like to have no one want to come to your club. We spent years being grateful for even being linked to players in the media who frankly were never going to come here.

If there is one thing worse than not being able to secure players, it is not even rating a mention in the daily pressers as a serious option.

The bears were one of the 5 teams linked in conversation the media when this broke, journos then since found out they didn’t hold an interest. I think the troubles Perth are running into is that any smart player will wait until PNG roster fills completely before committing there.

That's crazy that players would prioritise third-world compound, tax free living over moving to Perth.

Maybe Luke is discovering that a year is a long time in Rugby league, and that this latest injury is a straw that broke the camels back.

It might just be a situation as straight forward as these job offers featuring heavily weighted health and performance clauses which Metcalf is baulking at?

Anyone signing him without clauses to protect themselves would be crazy.

Or equally likely: "Luke We understand you were upset about what position you play on the field, we think we can accommodate that, but what would be your perspective if that did not work out and we asked you to play in another position?" (like any job in the real world, I am sure most respectable NRL coaches would want that question tested in an interview)

"I want to play seven, gimme the keys, the keys, give them to me"

'right thanks for that Luke, we will let you NO....I mean know.....sorry slip of the tongue".

Id argue being coached by mal is their main issue first and foremost. Hard to expect players to move there if the coach refuses to.

Thanks Luke, we'll keep in touch.

Nekt minute: The dogs pulled out of the race....

I know it's very nice to throw around a $1m package deal and we don't really know what the new Wah's contract is worth ($900k being generally referred to) . What I'm missing is why might he feel his value has gone up in the last 6 months? I'd think at best, it stays the same or, with further injury and the ACL game-time tests still some way to go it could have gone down. He might end up with $750-800k as clubs think he's only worth that at this time with room to climb after he proves himself.

Now ripping up in cup before asking for "clarification" would have been a good bargaining chip compared to nothing or 2 dud performances...
