Experiment over. He's a half.
It was always going to be hard replacing Johnson. A lot of teams struggle replacing a long term half. Johnson was better at the key requirements of a half than our replacement options.
The main ones we needed to find were organisation, kicking and ball playing. A few of our guys aren't bad at organising. From what I've seen
Boyd's kicking isn't bad.
Metcalf is improving in both. The one think I've wanted to replace from Johnson is his ball playing. We got a few guys running into holes last night which was nice to see.
I'll concentrate on
Boyd as he's playing the same role in NSW Cup. He is playing well overall which is what we want pressure on the first grade side to keep performing.
I know the common criticism is our attack hasn't looked great. Being organised doesn't always equal an effective attack. Quite a few sides move the ball around to a plan but don't score off it.
Metcalf seems to be embracing the responsibility. Having him around the ball more means he's in a position to support on breaks. The try saving tackles shows he's got a desire to win. Those efforts will lift his team mates.
My concern would be to do we continue with his goal kicking and wait for it to come good?
