Is he a genuine #7? I dunno but him and CHT each playing a hybrid 6.5 role is looking very promising. It will be interesting to see how he goes when he has a #6 alongside him who is a run first style of player & even more responsibility falls upon his shoulders.
What he is though is a winner! 29 starts in the halves in the NRL for 21 victories. His enthusiasm appears to be contagious

Pretty much the exact same style as the storm. Hughes is and 100% started off as anything but a 7.

I think it’s Clark that’s opening up space for him by going so deep into the line. Egan and Clark are setting are great platform for both halves. Think that’s when cowboys piled points on, was when Clark was off?

I think Clark and Egan are making CHT and Metcalf look even better. The same way tohu and Egan made SJ look even better. They deserve every single bit of praise they get.

But I don't think that is related to how badly we got thrashed in the 2nd half. They scored 3 (I think) down Rocco's side after he was injured. Capes is a good fill in center but he was gassed from playing as a 2nd rower. So I'm not sure what both of them could of done to stem the bleeding.

And I don't think either being off in the 2nd half was why we scored so little. I think it was the 95% of possession being in our own half that would kill the attack.

Capewell was based at 2nd row is he timing for origin? Weird he has no synergy with Taine didn’t they play together against Brisbane??

Luke looked like he learned enough against very good teams and decided to take the line on and throw out the stop start hesitations, against an average defensive team and murdered them in 40 minutes.

I think the learning for this week is how to halt the momentum, is it bench rotation? Was Ford injured or gassed? The right edge plan b what happened? 3-4 unforced errors was it the wet ball or panic? Luke probably had one chance to make a difference and it ended up being clutch (try saver)

Yeah. Nah.

Let’s review at the end of the season how consistent these performances are … it’s heading in the right direction for sure…
Alternative solution?

Nah like, actually give me any answer….
Anything…….. (this is open to anyone btw, not just you)

What is it we are waiting for?
Who are these players lining up to play for the Warriors?

Btw, Metcalf can negotiate with other clubs by November. He’ll be getting offers, 100%.
And I dare say, someone will give him a significant pay increase.

Lock him down, give him his money.

Yeah Clark coming off wasn’t the reason alone we leaked points in the second half, but it was interesting to hear the commentary team say at one point that Webster is rushing Clark back on and we held them out defensively from then on. He’s doing a great job and being an ex halve knows exactly what he can do to complement Metcalf

Yep lock him and CHT down ASAP.
CHT compliments Metcalf well.

They are a real combo with each chiming in and taking the pressure of each other.

CHT actually has more try/ try assists than Metcalf this year and the kicking is pretty evenly shared with 45% to 55% to Metcalf.

Webster said preseason we were playing a shared role in the halves and appear to be playing with two playmakers that can interchange the 6/7 roles.

Metcalf is the frontman but CHT is doing great work in there as well.

We have people the last few months worrying about a release.

It is always going to be a risk with Australian players. Especially after having a child.

The best the club can do is make sure she has a support network around his partner. Especially when she doesn't have family across visiting or when the team is travelling. Obviously that would only be during the day time so his partner will still have to deal with the night with a new born.

If she is finding it hard and they need to look to move on. Yes, due to this years form he would be in a good bargaining position. It can also be flipped to would it work out so well at another club? The Warriors have shown a lot of faith in him with the rehab in the States. The coach has likely done a lot of work with him. He has been given a marque position in an NRL side. Those spots are limited. Is there another club he'd walk straight into? Maybe Dragons and Souths.

The best the club can do is to make Metcalf and his partner happy in Auckland. At the moment he's happy.

I know we have had players wanting releases in the past. We can't shy away from signing Australians. We just need to provide a set up in Auckland that could cover some situations.

Townsend for example was released as there was an illness in the family. The best you can do there is encourage travel. But that is a more realistic reason for a release. Having a child is different to me after recently raising two boys away from family it is doable.

Contract time it's different but the best we can do is provide a competitive offer and review the development he has had here and where we sings things going.

Is the Is the Metcalf experience to halves over thread over?
Experiment over. He's a half.

It was always going to be hard replacing Johnson. A lot of teams struggle replacing a long term half. Johnson was better at the key requirements of a half than our replacement options.

The main ones we needed to find were organisation, kicking and ball playing. A few of our guys aren't bad at organising. From what I've seen Boyd's kicking isn't bad.

Metcalf is improving in both. The one think I've wanted to replace from Johnson is his ball playing. We got a few guys running into holes last night which was nice to see.

I'll concentrate on Boyd as he's playing the same role in NSW Cup. He is playing well overall which is what we want pressure on the first grade side to keep performing.

I know the common criticism is our attack hasn't looked great. Being organised doesn't always equal an effective attack. Quite a few sides move the ball around to a plan but don't score off it.

Metcalf seems to be embracing the responsibility. Having him around the ball more means he's in a position to support on breaks. The try saving tackles shows he's got a desire to win. Those efforts will lift his team mates.

My concern would be to do we continue with his goal kicking and wait for it to come good?

Agree with you on this.
My thoughts are how much do we upgrade Metcalf.
If Dylan Brown is worth 1. 3m what would Metcalf be worth on the open market 🤔
Brown is probably at his ceiling now and I think Metcalf has a lot more to come especially with expansion teams coming in with possible concessions.

I think 3 years at $800k per season is where I’m at currently regarding his offer. Backended deals not the go, but I think goals based incentives to go to a million in the final season or close to would be an option. No options either, he and the club need to trust each other that both parties will do all they can to bring our maiden premiership

Very tricky situation for us. Metcalf is playing well and we're winning. BUT, he's not really playing as a controlling, dominant half and that's the kind of money he's going to be commanding if we continue to win.

Not quite 10 games into his career as a stsrting halfback, I feel he's worth about 700k or so, but I have a feeling we'll need to pay him a little more than that to get him over the line. But, giving him $1 mil seems pretty nuts. Unfortunately halves are going to be at a premium soo , especially with the 2 new teams coming in so we could see middle of the road halves fetch 700-900k.

I agree with your ballpark figures and the logic behind them.

His rate of progression is astonishing though. He's getting more and more control given to him by the week and it's starting to pay dividends.

I think he's definitely heading in the right direction for that sort of money, but he's not there yet.
