Players salaries are fixed at what price they were bought at, and travel with the player wherever that may be.
So for your example:
| Your Cap | Other teams Cap |
| Before Trade | Vatuvei at 500k | Maloney at 1m |
| Trade out Vatuvei | - 500k | +500k |
| Trade in Maloney | +1m | -1m |
| Cash you pay/receive | +200k | -200k |
| Net Change | +700k | -700k |
How much is Maloney worth on your books?
$1,000,000 — his original auction price. The salary is stored on the roster record
and doesn't change when traded. The $200k cash you paid doesn't affect Maloney's
salary — it's a separate salary cap adjustment.
If you then trade Maloney out?
He's still worth $1M on whoever receives him. His roster salary is always $1M
regardless of how many times he's traded. So:
- You'd free up $1M of cap space
- The receiving team would take on $1M of cap space
Some things to note:
- Trades don't need to be even
- Player salaries are permanent (set at auction) and travel with the player
- Cash is a cap-space sweetener, not a player price change
- Both teams must stay under the cap after the trade
