Politics πŸ—³οΈ NZ Politics

NZ spends nearly half a billion dollars on homelessness. That number has been steadily increasing. Please look into global empirical evidence. California spent $20B on homelessness and the rate doubled. Now they are blocking audits into where the money went.

As I said, asylums and harsher sentencing for vagrant criminals. That would solve 75% of the issue, less than the 93% estimated by the US DEA
The politics you and others on the right here endorse are a major cause of homelessness.

Complex problems require intelligent empathic solutions.

Yeah I think the mental health angle needs a lot more work

I imagine a lot of these people should actually be in proper care facilities

What's my solution? I'd tidy up the ACC system and reallocate a lot of funding to mental health care facilities. ACC is leaky as f*ck, and a lot of that health money should be better spent on fixing health, rather than massages for sprains
I think money is one thing. We are spending a lot on accommodation but perhaps not enough on long term solutions and/or preventions.

I would love a bipartisan bill around mental health. It shouldn't just be one government giving one charity (I am hope) a wad of cash. There are many ways to help and if there are many avenues to seek help. Hopefully those people get the support.

Mitey. JKs in school program is a bit wishy washy and needs refinement. Voices of Hope do great things but undervalued.
Youthline needs more funding etc etc.

Seems like this will be unpopular on top of national’s unpopularity. Credit for being transparent but I don’t think it’s going to be a vote winner and completely against Winston’s wishes I would imagine
Yeah. I don't know how this wins him any votes. Australians pension is 67 and a few other countries too. Didn't France raise theirs from 63 to 65 and caused chaos?

65 is already old enough man.

I think it will go up in time but I don’t see Luxon as the one to sell it

The other idea I had this arvo is super harsh penalties on super harsh penalties on kiddy fiddlers / domestic abusers etc, and making it easier to report. Somehow stop people growing up with abuse problems. So they don’t turn to drink / drugs later in life

A slow burn but hopefully gets closer to the cause of people’s lives heading south

Yes it’s 67 in Aus
Plus it’s means (income) and asset tested
My wife works (63) and clears 900 a week
Thus I get only about 40 per cent of the Aus pension and because I was born in Nz and have only lived 30!years in Aus Aus get Nz to pay 2/3 of it
So it’s quite different to Nz where you get the full amount no questions asked rich or poor

That should be the first avenue NZ explores. It’s funny in NZ, there’s a feeling of entitlement that are placed upon some yet our pm took a clean car subsidy and learnt māori on the taxpayer before scrapping them despite being someone who could comfortably foot the bill. Would be interesting to see who stomped their feet if means testing was employed?
